Small Crime is a Greek comedic drama directed by Christos Georgiou, which tells the story of a policeman named Leonidas who is sent to the small and quiet island of Sifnos to solve a case of dogs poisoning. The role of Leonidas is played by Aris Servetalis, an excellent Greek actor, who carries the weight of the character flawlessly on his shoulders.
As Leonidas arrives on the island, he quickly realizes that things are not as simple as they seem, and the investigation turns out to be much more complicated than he thought. Alongside him in the investigation is the island's veterinarian, Dr. Irena (played by Vicky Papadopoulou), who becomes a critical ally in his search for the truth. Servetalis and Papadopoulou perfectly complement each other and provide the movie with a fantastic and entertaining dynamic.
Small Crime is a mix of many genres, including comedy, drama, and mystery. The movie uses the island's stunning scenery to create a peaceful and relaxing background for a story with a somber tone. Despite the unpleasant nature of the subject, the film manages to retain a lighthearted feel, which is something of an achievement, considering the events that take place.
Throughout the movie, we get to see Leonidas' character go through an enormous personal transformation, which adds depth to the story. He is a flawed character and has a rough-around-the-edges demeanor; he is the town's subject of gossip and ridicule, but as he delves deeper into the investigation, we start to see the good in him. He becomes more compassionate and develops empathy for the people around him, and we slowly start to see his rough exterior break away.
The movie's pace is slow and methodical, allowing us to take in the gorgeous surroundings and the laid-back nature of the island, which is a refreshing change of pace from the usual fast-paced action movies so often produced by Hollywood. The film takes its time to develop the plot, and while some may find it too slow, it keeps the audience engaged by delivering a few plot twists, which serve to keep us guessing about how things will turn out.
The movie's soundtrack is an integral part of it, and it fits with the tranquil and serene backdrop seamlessly. The dialogues are crisp, clean, and relatable, and the acting by the entire cast is superb. The supporting cast is also worthy of praise, from the island's golden boy, played perfectly by Rania Oikonomidou, to the wise old man, played by Michalis Iatropoulos, every character is essential, and each of them plays a significant role in the story.
Small Crime is a satisfying blend of genres, with its unique combination of the police procedural, comedy, and drama. The movie is a visual treat, with the stunning Greek island serving as the ideal backdrop for the story. All in all, the film is the ideal watch for anyone looking for a good mystery, a heart-warming story, and a bit of comedy thrown in. It's definitely a movie that deserves your time and attention.
