Slither is a 2006 horror/comedy film that takes place in a small town in South Carolina. The movie stars Nathan Fillion as Bill Pardy, the town sheriff, Elizabeth Banks as Starla Grant, his love interest, and Michael Rooker as Grant Grant, the town's wealthy businessman. The movie begins with an astronomical object falling from the sky and crashing into the woods outside of town. In the opening minutes of the film, we meet Grant Grant, who is out hunting in the woods with his dogs. He stumbles upon the fallen object, which turns out to be a parasitic alien worm that quickly burrows its way into Grant's body.
From there, things quickly spiral out of control. Grant begins to exhibit strange behavior and becomes increasingly aggressive towards his wife, Starla. As the movie progresses, we learn that the parasite is spreading throughout the town, infecting others and turning them into mindless zombies.
One of the things that sets Slither apart from other horror films is its unique blend of horror and comedy. While the movie is undeniably gory and gruesome, there are also plenty of laugh-out-loud moments sprinkled throughout. The characters are well-written and well-acted, particularly Nathan Fillion as the town sheriff. He injects plenty of humor into his role without detracting from the overall creepy vibe of the movie.
Another standout feature of the film is its use of practical effects. Director James Gunn opted for practical effects over CGI wherever possible, which gives the movie a tangible, hand-crafted feel that is often missing from modern horror films. The creature designs are particularly impressive, ranging from a giant slug-like monster to a mass of writhing tentacles.
The film's pacing is also worth noting. Despite its 95-minute runtime, Slither manages to pack a lot of action and suspense into its runtime without feeling rushed or cluttered. All of the plot points are neatly tied up by the end of the film, leaving viewers satisfied with the story's conclusion.
For horror fans who are looking for something with a little bit of humor and a lot of gore, Slither is definitely worth checking out. While it may not be for everyone, those who appreciate a good B-movie will find plenty to enjoy in this underrated gem.
