Sinister takes horror movies based on the paranormal to a whole new level. What starts as a crime novelist moving himself and his family into a home where an entire family were murdered, except one child who went missing. The novelist intends to use the murders as the inspiration for his newest book.
In the attic of the house the novelist finds a super eight projector and some innocently labelled movies that are far from what they should be. He watches the movies and is horrified by what they reveal. The opening scene of the movie itself is a home movie type footage piece depicting a family of four with bags over their heads and nooses around their necks under a tree. Someone off frame is sawing at a limb that is holding the branch the nooses are tied to and when it is cut through the entire family is sent into the air and strangled. This movie when found in the attic is labelled Family Hanging Out '11.

More films are shown, such as Pool Party '66 which shows the drowning of a family. In another, called BBQ '69 there is an arson used as the murder of a family. The home movies labelled Sleepy Time '98 and Lawn Work '86 show families with their throats cut in their beds and run over by a lawnmower, respectively.

As the author continues to watch the films and notice strange symbols near the murder scenes, and a dark figure in the pool during the drownings, which begins appearing in every film as he watches them more frequently, odd things start happening in the house itself. He contacts a local deputy to help him find the houses in which all the murders took place and they piece together that every family has one child missing during, or after the murders.

After further investigation, Pagan symbols and an ancient God who reportedly eats the souls of children is discovered to be the dark figure. After every murder the missing child is taken by the Pagan God to the Netherworld. One night he hears the projector running in the attic and climbs up there to discover the five missing children watching the films. The author then moves his family away from the house, after burning the projector, camera and films. In their old house he finds the box, unharmed, containing the films and cameras.

The deputy, after repeated ignored calls finally gets through to the novelist and informs him the families who were murdered had all lived in the house they had just left, and by moving he has put his family at risk. The novelist then passes out, to awaken to being tied and gagged with his wife and son.His daughter then comes in with a hatchet and a super eight camera she uses to document the murders of her family. After hacking them to death she paints the walls with their blood, and is seen being taken by the dark figure after watching her film. The final shot is the box in the attic with a new film titled Painting the House '12.
