Since You've Been Gone is a heartwarming comedy-drama movie from 1998 that showcases how past friendships can rekindle even in the most unexpected circumstances. Directed by David Schwimmer and written by Jeff Astrof and Mike Sikowitz, the film features an ensemble cast of talented actors including Philip Rayburn Smith, Joey Slotnick, and Joy Gregory.
The movie opens to a group of friends gathering to celebrate the 30th birthday of Grace Williams, played by Gregory. This lively group of friends consists of Kevin MacEldowney (Smith), Nick (Slotnick), Holly Sherman (Lara Harris), and Eve Mozell (Tea Leoni). The film takes us on a rollercoaster ride through their ups and downs as they navigate their way through various personal and professional struggles while trying to keep their friendship intact.
Kevin, the charming and smooth-talking investment banker, has a rather tumultuous journey throughout the film. Having been successful in his professional life, he is frustrated with the lack of happiness in his personal life. Kevin's troubles begin when he loses his job, and his relationship with his girlfriend, Sherry (Marla Sokoloff), falls apart. He is forced to move in with his estranged mother, who is undergoing chemotherapy, and his relationship with her is a battle that takes a toll on him emotionally.
Nick, on the other hand, is a struggling writer who is in desperate need of inspiration. His career is at a standstill, and he is unable to write anything substantial. His frustration takes a toll on his relationship with Holly, his girlfriend. As the days go by, Nick spirals into a deep depression and loses all hope, but the unconditional support of his friends keeps him going.
Holly is a strong and independent woman, who runs a successful art gallery. While she seems to have it all, her relationship with Nick is in shambles as a result of his emotional turmoil. Her struggles with her relationship and her business are compounded by her desire to start a family, but the difficulties in her personal life put a strain on her relationship with Mia, her supportive and trusted assistant.
Eve, the responsible and practical one in the group, is going through a complicated time, too. Her boyfriend Ben (Jon Tenney) proposes to her, much to her surprise, and she is not sure if she is ready for marriage. An unexpected visit from her ex-boyfriend, who is now dating her sister, makes things even more difficult for her. She seeks comfort in her friends, who empathize with her in the midst of their own struggles.
As the film progresses, the friends deal with these difficult situations, relying on one another for emotional support. They reminisce about old times, dance, and sing their feelings out, proving that despite all the complexity of their lives, their bond remains unbreakable. They bear witness to each other's heartaches and offer comfort, constantly reaffirming their loyalty and commitment to each other.
Since You've Been Gone is a story about friendship, love, and the pursuit of happiness. It encapsulates the true essence of solid friendships, which are all about being there for each other when times are tough. The film is a perfect blend of humor and emotions, with the cast delivering superb performances. Schwimmer's direction allows the actors to truly shine, resulting in a movie that's both entertaining and genuinely moving.
