Side Out is a sports movie based on the game of volleyball, released in 1990. The film features C. Thomas Howell, Peter Horton, and Courtney Thorne-Smith in the lead roles. The movie is directed by Peter Israelson and written by David Thoreau. The story follows Monroe Clark (C. Thomas Howell), a law student from Ohio. He comes to California to work for a law firm and live with his uncle Max (Terry Kiser) for the summer. Monroe's uncle is a middle-aged beach bum who spends his days playing volleyball and enjoying the Californian lifestyle. Monroe, who is used to playing indoor volleyball, soon discovers the excitement and thrill of beach volleyball.
As Monroe is new to the game, he needs a partner to play tournaments. He meets Zack Barnes (Peter Horton), an experienced beach volleyball player who has fallen on hard times. Zack is a former champion who lost his confidence after a disastrous performance in a tournament. Monroe persuades him to team up with him, and they start playing together. Zack, who was hesitant to make a comeback, got back his confidence and started enjoying the game once again.
On the other hand, Wiley Hunter (Christopher Rydell) and his partner, Hoops McCann (Harley Jane Kozak), are the best players on the beach. They are arrogant and believe in winning at any cost. Wiley and Hoops taunt and ridicule Zack and Monroe, warning them to stay out of their way. When they realize that Monroe and Zack have potential, they become worried about their status as champions.
Meanwhile, Monroe falls in love with a wealthy girl, Samantha (Courtney Thorne-Smith), who is the daughter of a millionaire businessman (David Knell). Samantha is a law student like Monroe, but she leads a luxurious life. Monroe, who is from a humble background, struggles to keep up with Samanthaâs elite friends. But Samantha is drawn to Monroeâs easy-going attitude and passion for volleyball.
The film portrays the game of beach volleyball in a way that makes it exciting and fun to watch. The game sequences, with the wind and sand, are shot beautifully. The actors, especially the lead actors, C. Thomas Howell, and Peter Horton, give their best performances. They play their roles with sincerity and passion. Courtney Thorne-Smith, who plays Samantha, is charming and looks stunning throughout the movie.
Apart from the sports action, the movie also touches on themes like friendship, love, and personal growth. The relationship between Monroe and Zack develops from just being teammates to being good friends. Monroe learns to be passionate about things that matter, and Zack learns to let go of his past mistakes.
Overall, Side Out is an entertaining and enjoyable sports movie. It has a good mix of comedy, drama, and action. The movie captures the essence of beach volleyball and the Californian lifestyle. If you love sports movies, then Side Out is worth watching.
