Sharknado is a 2013 disaster horror film that was directed by Anthony C. Ferrante and produced by The Asylum. The plot of the film revolves around a massive hurricane that hits Los Angeles, causing a series of destructive tornadoes that eventually suck up a bunch of sharks from the ocean and rain them down upon the city. Ian Ziering plays Fin, a bar owner and former surfing champion who teams up with his estranged wife April (Tara Reid) and a group of friends to try and survive the deadly storm.
The film opens with Fin and his friend Baz (Jaason Simmons) out on a fishing boat, trying to catch some sharks for Fin's bar. Little do they know that a massive hurricane is brewing off the coast, and as the storm begins to intensify, they start to feel the effects of the wind and the rain. Just as they're about to head back to shore, a giant waterspout appears out of nowhere, sucking up dozens of sharks into its swirling vortex.
The rest of the film follows a similar pattern, as the characters struggle to survive wave after wave of sharknados that descend upon Los Angeles. The first sharknado hits Santa Monica Pier, resulting in a chaotic scene as beachgoers are attacked by sharks falling from the sky. Fin and April reunite in the aftermath of the storm, and together with Baz, they set out to try and rescue Fin's daughter, who is trapped in a flooded high-rise building.
As they make their way through the flooded streets, they encounter a colorful cast of characters, including a drunk helicopter pilot (John Heard) who agrees to fly them to safety, and a group of surfers who are determined to ride the waves of the sharknado. Along the way, they also face off against a rival bar owner who is trying to steal Fin's customers, and a team of scientists who are studying the effects of the storm.
While the film is undoubtedly silly and over-the-top, it also manages to strike a balance between humor and horror, with plenty of moments that are genuinely tense and suspenseful. The visual effects are also surprisingly well-done, given the low budget of the film, and there are plenty of creative and memorable sequences, such as the scene where Fin uses a chainsaw to cut his way out of a giant shark's belly.
At its core, Sharknado is a fun and campy B-movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. While it may not be for everyone, it has gained a cult following over the years, and its blend of absurdity, action, and humor make it a perfect example of the kind of escapist entertainment that has become so popular in recent years. Although the film is far from perfect, it is an entertaining and enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes, and it is easy to see why it has become such a beloved cult classic.
Sharknado is a 2013 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 26 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.3.
