Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness is a 2015 adventure-comedy-horror film, which initially premiered on Syfy Channel. The film is directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, and produced by The Asylum. The movie is an iconic part of the Sharknado franchise, which follows the story of various characters as they try to survive the chaos caused by a massive natural disaster, in which hungry sharks are uprooted from their natural habitat and sent airborne by a massive tornado. The film initially follows the main character, Fin Shepard, as he battles waves of sharks that are attacking his family and friends.
In Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness, the story follows a new lead character named Gil Shepard (played by Jared Cohn). Gil is the younger brother of Fin, the protagonist of the earlier films. Gil has been on a path of self-destruction since witnessing the horrific events of those previous films, and the guilt is eating him alive.
As the movie begins, Gil has become a thrill-seeking surfer in Mexico; however, when a new Sharknado hits the coast, Gil is specifically targeted by the sharks, leading him to believe that the disaster is somehow connected to him.
Gil returns to the United States and links up with his brother Fin (played by Ian Ziering), who has become a key player in defending against the Sharknado's exploits since the previous events. Along with their friends Nova (played by Cassie Scerbo), Matt (played by Cody Linley), and Claudia (played by Marie Avgeropoulos), Fin and Gil embark on what can only be described as a mission impossible to save humanity from being wiped out by the bloodthirsty sharks.
The plot of the film follows the typical Sharknado formula, including over-the-top action scenes and a ridiculous assortment of weapons, such as chainsaws, grenades, and laser guns, that the characters use to battle the sharks. However, Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness takes things a step further, bringing the characters face to face with their deepest, darkest fears.
The film explores the Shepard brothers' relationship in more detail, showing how the tragic events of the previous films have affected both of them in very different but equally destructive ways. Gil initially resents Fin for surviving the events that destroyed many people around them while he was powerless to stop them. However, as the story unfolds, the two find a way to reconcile their differences and work together to save the world from the Sharknado and, more importantly, themselves.
In Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness, the filmmakers also seem to take a bit of a departure from the series' usual formula, leaning more towards a self-parody of the franchise than trying to take the concept seriously. They include a plethora of bizarre and unexpected moments, including a live concert being held in the middle of a Sharknado, a lab where sharks are genetically modified to possess human abilities, and even a parody of the hit show Dancing with the Stars.
In true Sharknado fashion, the film also features celebrity cameos, including David Hasselhoff, who plays none other than Gil's therapist. Additionally, Tara Reid returns to reprise her role as April Wexler, Fin's ex-wife, and former hero of the Sharknado saga. However, this time around, April has gone from a badass with a chainsaw to an omnipotent being, who is guiding them with her new powers.
In conclusion, Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness is a zany, over-the-top film that will leave viewers both entertained and scratching their heads. It is a movie that will appeal to fans of the previous Sharknado titles, but to fully enjoy the experience, it's best to approach it with an open mind and a willingness to not take it too seriously.
