In the late 1600s, during the Qing Dynasty in China, the Manchu government institutes a ban on martial arts in an effort to suppress rebellion. Discontent with this new regulation, a famous warrior, Chu Zhaonan (played by Leon Lai), falls into a deep depression but is soon recruited to lead a group of fighters to defend their village from bandits.

While gathering a group of warriors to join his cause, Chu Zhaonan stumbles upon a sinister plot orchestrated by the evil Jiao Zhongqing (played by Lau Kar-leung), who intends to eradicate all opposition to the Manchu government by hunting down and executing anyone with martial arts abilities. Chu and his warriors ultimately decide to take on the daunting task of protecting their people through forming a group called the Seven Swords.

Each of the Seven Swords possesses unique abilities and quirks that make them interesting additions to the team. For instance, there is Han Zhibang (played by Donnie Yen), the group's swordsman with a mysterious past, and Mulang (played by Charlie Yeung), a woman disguised as a eunuch with a hidden agenda. The group meets numerous trials and tribulations as they journey across China, fighting Jiao's ruthless men and developing a sense of comradeship amongst themselves.

The Seven Swords must confront not only outside threats but also internal drama as their alliance faces shifting loyalties and various difficulties. While some members of the group are motivated by principles of honor and justice, others have more individualistic agendas. Meanwhile, Jiao Zhongqing's minions continue to close in on them, and brutal fights ensue, all leading up to a final epic battle where the fate of China hangs in the balance.

As a martial arts film, Seven Swords offers high-flying action with intricate fight choreography that showcases the diverse skills of each character. While in some ways similar to wuxia films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Seven Swords has a more somber and gritty tone that explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the value of human life. The film's gorgeous cinematography and stunning scenery add to its somber and eerie atmosphere, while its soundtrack featuring traditional Chinese instruments further immerses the audience in its historical setting.

The cast of Seven Swords delivers solid performances, with Donnie Yen's enigmatic swordsman Han Zhibang and Charlie Yeung's complex Mulang standing out as two of the most memorable characters. Leon Lai as Chu Zhaonan is believable as the stoic leader who is struggling to find purpose in a world that has turned against him. Lau Kar-leung as the villain Jiao Zhongqing gives a memorable and entertaining portrayal of a cunning mastermind.

Despite some of the more traditional aspects of the film, director Tsui Hark injects modern elements and a fresh perspective that make Seven Swords stand out from other martial arts epics. With its memorable characters, superb fight scenes, and a gripping, suspenseful plot, Seven Swords is a film that deserves a place amongst the pantheon of great historical epics.

Seven Swords is a 2005 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 33 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1.
