Two overworked, underpaid assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), work for demanding bosses in the same building. Harper is the assistant to Kirsten (Lucy Liu), a renowned sports journalist who has no personal life to speak of, while Charlie is a right-hand man to Rick (Taye Diggs), a high-powered venture capitalist who expects nothing less than perfection. Both assistants are tired of being constantly at the beck and call of their bosses, and they bond over the fact that they barely have time to sleep, let alone have fun.
One night, after a particularly grueling day at work, Harper and Charlie run into each other in the lobby of their office building. Charlie is trying to come up with a plan to convince Rick to invest in a new start-up, while Harper is stressing about her upcoming deadline for Kirsten's latest article. As they commiserate over their miserable lives, they come up with an idea: what if they set up their bosses with each other? If Kirsten and Rick hit it off, they would hopefully be so busy with their newfound love lives that they would leave their assistants alone. It's a win-win situation, right?
Despite a few initial hiccups, Harper and Charlie manage to orchestrate a meeting between Kirsten and Rick. They're thrilled when the two bosses hit it off, but they quickly realize that setting up two busy, successful people is harder than they thought. Kirsten and Rick have their own baggage to deal with, and their budding romance starts to take a toll on their work lives. Meanwhile, Harper and Charlie are spending more and more time together as they try to keep Kirsten and Rick's relationship afloat. It's not long before they realize that they might have feelings for each other, too.
As Kirsten and Rick's relationship heats up, so does the tension between Harper and Charlie. They're both afraid to act on their feelings, but they can't deny their chemistry. It all comes to a head at Kirsten's annual summer soirée, where Harper and Charlie end up stealing a private moment together. However, their romance is short-lived when Kirsten and Rick's relationship implodes. Both bosses end up back at work with a vengeance, leaving Harper and Charlie with even more work to do.
In the end, Harper and Charlie realize that they need to focus on their own lives and let their bosses take care of themselves. They part ways amicably, but it's clear that they'll always have a special connection. As the movie ends, Harper and Charlie are both pursuing their dreams and living the lives they've always wanted - without their bosses holding them back.
Overall, Set It Up is a charming, funny romantic comedy that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. The chemistry between Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell is electric, and Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs both turn in strong performances as their demanding bosses. The script is witty and smart, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt scenes. If you're a fan of rom-coms, you won't want to miss Set It Up.
