Semi-Pro is about the player-owner of a basketball team named Jackie Moon. Jackie is a former pop star who uses his fortune to buy the Flint Tropics. The team is struggling to earn wins and attract fans, but Jackie is determined to guide his team to better days. An opportunity arises when the NBA offers to accept four teams from Jackie's league. The Tropics are initially up for consideration because of their poor play, but Jackie convinces the NBA to give him the rest of the season to turn things around. He must bring his team up from the bottom of the standings and attract enough fans to make the franchise appealing to the more established league.
Because Jackie is an eccentric person, he employs a variety of odd tactics to accomplish his goals, including trading the team's washing machine for a better point guard. Ed Monix is a former NBA backup and wants desperately to get back into the league.
Monix proves his worth quickly, becoming the star of the Tropics as he replaces Jackie at point guard. This new lineup gives Jackie more time to coach the team and to come up with elaborate stunts to attract bigger crowds, including wrestling a bear at halftime of one of the games.
Even after the Tropics enjoy more success, the NBA remains skeptical of the franchise and ultimately decides that the terms of the original deal should be changed. Just as the Tropics are about to reach their goals, Jackie learns that the team probably won't make it to the NBA no matter what they do. Still, he inspires his team to finish the season and give the new fans something to cheer about.
Jackie embodies the film's stance on persevering through hard times. It also shows that even seemingly impossible goals can be reached with teamwork.
Semi-Pro is a 2008 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.8 and a MetaScore of 47.
