Seems Like Old Times is a quirky romantic comedy directed by Jay Sandrich and released in 1980. The film, starring Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase, and Charles Grodin, takes viewers on a wild ride as we follow the story of a successful lawyer named Glenda (Hawn) who is forced to turn to her ex-husband, Nick (Chase), for help, putting a strain on her current relationship with her second husband, Ira (Grodin).
The movie opens with Glenda, who has just been released from prison for refusing to reveal information about her ex-husband's bank robbery, hitchhiking her way to her best friend's (played by actress Kristen Vigard) house located in the beautiful central coast of California. Once she arrives, she learns that her friend is out of town and has rented her house to none other than her ex-husband, Nick, a famous writer turned gardener. The two then butt heads as she tries to avoid him and get her life back together. When she finally secures a job interview at a prestigious law firm, she learns that she needs Nick's help to keep her in line until the interview is over. As the clock ticks down, she thinks of a plan to use Nick as an alibi and clear her name. At the same time, she is struggling to keep her current relationship with Ira afloat, leading to even more confusion and hilarity.
Goldie Hawn is in top form as Glenda, a likeable, bubbly character who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Chevy Chase plays her ex-husband, Nick, with his trademark charm, adding a vulnerable and sensitive side to his character that we are not used to seeing. Charles Grodin is excellent in his role as Glenda's second husband, Ira, bringing his brand of charm to the table as well. The acting is top-notch throughout, and the chemistry between the three leads is undeniable.
The comedic timing is perfect, with many laugh-out-loud moments. One particular scene that stands out is when Glenda accidentally ingests marijuana that Nick has been growing in his backyard, leading to hilarious results. The film also explores the complex relationships between its characters, showing us just how difficult it can be to navigate love, marriage, and jealousy.
The movie's setting is also noteworthy, with gorgeous shots of California's central coast that really capture the area's beauty and charm. The soundtrack is also a standout, featuring classics from Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, and other legends.
Overall, Seems Like Old Times is a fun, heartwarming, and entertaining film that still holds up today. The story is unique, with plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers engaged, and the performances are top-notch all around. Whether you're a fan of romantic comedies or just want to be entertained by a well-crafted film, Seems Like Old Times is definitely worth checking out.
