In the 1982 animated film, "The Secret of N.I.M.H.", based on the novel "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" by Robert C. O'Brien, we follow the journey of a brave and determined field mouse named Mrs. Brisby (voiced by Elizabeth Hartman) as she faces countless challenges to save her family. Mrs. Brisby's son, Timmy, falls ill with pneumonia, just as the field mice must move their home before a farmer plows the field. However, because of Timmy's condition, he cannot go outside, which makes moving difficult. Luckily, Mrs. Brisby receives wise advice and assistance from the Great Owl (voiced by John Carradine) who suggests she go to the rats for help.
Mrs. Brisby soon discovers that the rats living in the nearby rose bush have capabilities beyond that of the average rat, and after going through a series of events, she finds out that the rats were once experimental subjects in a National Institute of Mental Health laboratory, where they were given injections that raised their intelligence to the point that they could read and write, building an increasingly complex society. She also learns that her late husband, Jonathan, had been part of a group of rats who escaped from the laboratory and eventually found their way to their current location.
Their leader, Nicodemus (voiced by Derek Jacobi), gives Mrs. Brisby a highly advanced electronic device that she will need to be able to move her home without her son getting worse. However, the evil Jenner (voiced by Paul Shenar), a power-hungry rat, opposes the move and seeks to seize the throne of the rat colony. As the rats begin the move, the two sides engage in a fierce battle to determine who will lead the colony.
Throughout the course of the film, Mrs. Brisby learns that she is braver than she ever thought possible, and she is able to advocate for herself and her family in the face of many challenges. With the help of her new friends, she demonstrates an unwavering commitment to her family and to doing what is right.
The animation in "The Secret of N.I.M.H." is stunning and imaginative, with vividly detailed backgrounds which include complex interlocking tunnels and waterways built by the rats themselves. The characters express a wide range of emotions that range from fear to determination and truly give life to the viewer's imagination.
The voice acting in the film is extraordinary. Elizabeth Hartman brings depth and nuance to the character of Mrs. Brisby, imbuing her with a warmth and empathy that make us root for her throughout the film. Derek Jacobi is equally impressive as Nicodemus, showing a regal and wise demeanor that captures the audience's admiration.
Finally, we cannot overlook the delightful performance of Dom DeLuise as the loveable and bumbling crow, Jeremy. His comedic interjections throughout the film elevate the overall sense of humor and appeal to audiences of all ages.
Overall, "The Secret of N.I.M.H." is a classic animated tale that has stood the test of time. It transports us to a world of talking animals and adventure, while also instilling important values such as courage, perseverance, and family loyalty. It is a tale that will continue to charm audiences for years to come.
