Secret Obsession is a 2019 psychological thriller starring Brenda Song, Mike Vogel, and Dennis Haysbert. Directed by Peter Sullivan, the film tells the story of Jennifer Williams, a newlywed who wakes up from a traumatic accident and struggles to remember her past. As she tries to adjust to her new life, she begins to suspect that the man claiming to be her husband may not be who he says he is.
The movie begins with Jennifer (Brenda Song) on a road trip with her husband, Russell (Mike Vogel), celebrating their honeymoon. Their car breaks down in a remote area, and while Russell goes to get help, Jennifer is attacked by an unknown assailant. She wakes up in a hospital with amnesia, unaware of what happened to her husband or what led to her being in the hospital.
Jennifer is taken to Russell's lavish home where she begins her recovery. As she tries to piece together the fragments of her past, she finds herself increasingly disoriented and confused. Her husband seems caring and loving, but there is something off about his behavior that she cannot quite put her finger on.
The only person who seems to genuinely care for her is the detective assigned to her case, Frank Page (Dennis Haysbert). Frank is skeptical of Russell's intentions and begins to investigate him. As Frank delves deeper into the case, he discovers some unsettling information about Russell's past that suggests that he may be hiding something.
As Jennifer's memory slowly comes back, she starts to remember things that paint a different picture of her relationship with Russell. Her suspicions deepen as she realizes that someone is trying to prevent her from uncovering the truth about her past. She begins to fear for her safety as she realizes that anyone who comes close to her may be in danger.
The tension builds as the movie progresses, and the audience is left guessing who the real villain of the story is. The story takes some twists and turns that make the movie engaging and suspenseful. The ending is satisfying but not predictable, keeping the audience on edge until the final moments.
Brenda Song delivers a convincing performance as Jennifer, portraying her character's confusion and fear with empathy. Mike Vogel's character Russell is charming and caring, but his portrayal also conveys a sense of hidden menace that fits well with the psychological thriller genre. Dennis Haysbert's character Frank is a no-nonsense detective who provides a bit of relief from the building tension and serves as a voice of reason.
The cinematography of Secret Obsession is top-notch, with beautiful shots of the sprawling mansion in which the story takes place. The movie also has a haunting score that adds to the dark tone of the story.
Overall, Secret Obsession is a well-made psychological thriller that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.
