Screwballs is a 1983 comedy film that tells the story of a group of teenage boys who are constantly in trouble with their school principal. In an effort to avoid being expelled, they hatch a plan to lose their virginity before the end of the school year. The movie revolves around five high school boys who are constantly getting themselves into trouble. They are constantly being punished by their strict principal, Ms. McBain, who is fed up with their antics. The boys, however, seem unfazed by her threats and continue to act out, causing even more trouble for themselves.
Their lives take an interesting turn when they discover that one of their female classmates, Purity Busch, is a member of the chastity club, and they make a bet to see who can be the first to seduce her. As they work towards their goal, they come up with various schemes, including hiding in a treehouse to spy on her, slipping into her room to steal her underwear, and even dressing up in ridiculous costumes to try and catch her attention.
Along the way, they encounter a number of obstacles, including Purity's overprotective father, the school's vice-principal, and a rival group of boys who are also vying for Purity's affection. As they get closer and closer to their goal, they begin to realize that there is more to life than just losing their virginity, and they start to question the value of their bet.
Despite the absurdity of the plot, the movie is loaded with laughs and will appeal to anyone who enjoys raunchy, adolescent humor. The performances by the ensemble cast are solid, with Peter Keleghan, Kent Deuters, and Linda Speciale giving standout performances as the main characters.
One of the standout aspects of the movie is its strong sense of nostalgia. Shot in the early 80s, the movie captures the look and feel of the era perfectly, with its bright colors and wild fashion sense. The soundtrack is also packed with classic 80s tunes, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere.
The movie is not without its flaws, however. Its portrayal of women is problematic at best, with Purity being little more than a prize to be won by the boys. The film's outdated views on gender and sexuality may be off-putting to some viewers, and it is certainly not a movie for those looking for a more progressive take on these subjects.
Overall, however, Screwballs is an entertaining and hilarious comedy that successfully captures the spirit of its time. While it may not be for everyone, those who enjoy raunchy teen comedies will find much to enjoy here. Its nostalgic feel, big laughs, and ensemble cast make it a must-watch for fans of the genre.
Screwballs is a 1983 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 20 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6 and a MetaScore of 34.
