Scarewaves is a horror anthology film released in 2014. It features five short horror stories that take place inside a studio where a radio DJ is broadcasting on Halloween night. The movie opens with the radio DJ, known as Amos Satan, introducing the various segments while playing spooky music and giving his audience a playful scare.
In the first story, titled "Tangled Web," a woman named Sarah, played by Erin R. Ryan, goes to a party hosted by her ex-boyfriend. She meets a charming man named Rick, played by Iabou Windimere, who invites her back to his place. When she wakes up the next morning, she finds a strange webbing growing around her body. She soon discovers that Rick is part of a group of spider worshipers who plan to make her the centerpiece of their next ceremony.
The second story is called "Pilgrim," and it follows a group of friends who decide to spend Thanksgiving at a remote cabin. They unwittingly awaken a vengeful spirit who seeks to punish them for their sins.
The third segment, "Siren," is about a group of coworkers who get stranded on a deserted island after a work retreat goes wrong. They soon realize that they are not alone on the island as they are stalked by a creature with a haunting call.
In "Spaced," the fourth segment, an interdimensional traveler named Neely, played by Haley Madison, finds herself stranded on Earth. She must navigate her way through a 1950s style gas station and deal with the locals, who are not what they seem.
The final story, "Bad Eggs," follows a man named Patrick, who accidentally eats a batch of cursed eggs. He soon begins to experience strange and horrific symptoms that threaten to consume him.
Overall, Scarewaves is an entertaining horror anthology film that offers a variety of scares and enjoyable performances. The film is well-shot, with a good balance of humor, suspense, and terror. Each segment is different, but they all fit together nicely to create a cohesive whole. The radio DJ segments that bookend the film serve as a great framing device and add an extra layer of creepiness to the overall atmosphere.
One of the strengths of the film is its cast, particularly Erin R. Ryan, who delivers a strong performance as the lead in the first segment. Iabou Windimere is also a standout as the charming but menacing Rick. The supporting cast in each segment is also strong and helps to ground the stories in reality, making the terror feel more tangible.
The effects in Scarewaves are impressive, especially considering the film's low budget. The spider webbing in "Tangled Web" and the creature design in "Siren" are particularly effective, adding to the overall sense of unease and dread.
The film is not without its faults, however. Some of the segments feel a bit underdeveloped, leaving the viewer with unanswered questions. Additionally, some of the scares feel a bit cliché, particularly in the "Bad Eggs" segment.
Despite these shortcomings, Scarewaves is an enjoyable horror anthology that delivers on its promises of scares and thrills. The film succeeds in creating a creepy atmosphere and providing a variety of different horror scenarios. It's a great choice for horror fans looking for a fun, low-budget scare.
Scarewaves is a 2015 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 21 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.1.
