Synopsis: Sayonara Itsuka is a Japanese romantic drama film directed by John H. Lee and released in 2010. The film stars Miho Nakayama, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Yuriko Ishida, and others. The movie is adapted from a novel by novelist Takuji Ichikawa, and is centered around the life of Kaoruko Harima, a Japanese woman living in South Korea.
The movie opens with Kaoruko, known as Kaori, being rushed to a hospital after a sudden illness in South Korea. While recovering in the hospital, she reflects on her past, and the memories she shared with Lee Ji-soo, a banished North Korean officer whom she had fallen in love with.
The first part of the movie revolves around how Kaori meets Lee Ji-soo (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima). Kaori works as a Japanese language teacher in South Korea, and Ji-soo comes to her for lessons. Despite the initial communication barrier, the two eventually connect, thanks to their mutual love of Japanese literature. They soon become friends, meeting regularly to discuss books, poetry, and philosophy, and gradually, their relationship deepens into a romantic one. However, their love is not meant to be, as Lee Ji-soo is eventually forced to go back to North Korea.
The second part of the movie shows Kaori's present-day situation, as she tries to deal with her memories of her lost love. After recovering from her illness, she returns to Tokyo, where she meets a successful businessman named Hajime Onuki (played by Masanobu Katsumura). However, even in Tokyo, she is haunted by the memories of Lee Ji-soo, and the movie questions whether she can find love again after her tragic past.
The movie explores themes such as loss, memory, and the difficulty of moving on after a traumatic event. It is a touching story of love and loss, set against the backdrop of historic Korea and contemporary Tokyo.
Miho Nakayama portrays the role of Kaori with finesse, capturing the depth of the character's emotions and struggles. Hidetoshi Nishijima is equally impressive as Lee Ji-soo, bringing a quiet intensity to the role that makes him an unforgettable character.
Overall, Sayonara Itsuka is a film that will appeal to fans of romantic dramas, as well as those interested in Asian cultures and history. It is a beautifully crafted movie that will leave audiences moved and inspired.
