Sangram is a 1993 Bollywood action drama movie directed by Lawrence D'Souza, starring Ajay Devgn, Ayesha Jhulka, and Karisma Kapoor in lead roles. The film also featured Danny Denzongpa, Amrish Puri, and Reema Lagoo in supporting roles. The story of Sangram revolves around two childhood friends, Suraj and Deepak, played by Ajay Devgn and Ayesha Jhulka, respectively. Suraj is an orphan and is brought up by a criminal named Lala (Amrish Puri), who trains him to become a dreaded gangster. Deepak, on the other hand, belongs to a respectable family and has a bright future ahead of him. Despite the stark contrast in their lifestyles, Suraj and Deepak remain close friends.
As they grow up, Suraj falls in love with Mala (Karisma Kapoor), who is the daughter of a wealthy businessman. However, Mala's father is against their relationship owing to Suraj's criminal background. Meanwhile, Deepak becomes a police officer and is tasked with bringing Suraj to justice.
The movie takes an interesting turn when Lala, who considers Suraj as his own son, betrays him and hands him over to the police in exchange for his own safety. Suraj is then put behind bars, and his life takes a drastic turn. On the other hand, Deepak finds it hard to come to terms with the fact that he has to put his best friend behind bars. The emotional turmoil faced by the two friends and the predicament they find themselves in forms the crux of the story.
The movie's highlight is the portrayal of Suraj's character, played brilliantly by Ajay Devgn. He is the perfect amalgamation of a gangster with a heart of gold. His conviction in his choices and his loyalty towards his friend Deepak and his love interest Mala are what keep the audience intrigued. Ayesha Jhulka does justice to her role as well, portraying the dilemma faced by a cop who has to put his friend behind bars. Karisma Kapoor, in her early days in Bollywood, does justice to her role as well.
The supporting cast comprising of Danny Denzongpa, Reema Lagoo, and Amrish Puri do justice to their characters too. Danny, as a fellow gangster, delivers an engaging performance. Reema Lagoo, who plays the role of Ajay Devgn's caretaker, is brilliant in her portrayal of a warm, affectionate motherly figure. Amrish Puri, as the antagonist, brings his usual charm to the character of Lala.
The film is known for its catchy songs, which were composed by Nadeem-Shravan. "Aaj Hum Tum O Sanam," "O Rabba Koi To Bataye," "Bhagi Re Bhagi Re," and "Lal Lal Hoton Pe" are some of the notable tracks from the movie that continue to be popular to this day.
Overall, Sangram is a must-watch for fans of the Bollywood action-drama genre. The movie's narrative is engaging and keeps the audience hooked till the end. The excellent performances by Ajay Devgn, Ayesha Jhulka, and Karisma Kapoor, coupled with the film's well-executed storyline, make for a memorable cinematic experience.
