Saint Ange is a psychological horror film that was released in 2004. The movie is directed by Pascal Laugier and stars Virginie Ledoyen, Lou Doillon, and Catriona MacColl. The plot is set in the 1950s and revolves around a mansion-turned-orphanage, located in the French Alps. The story of the film centers around Anna Jurin (Virginie Ledoyen), a young woman who gets a job as a caretaker in Saint Ange, an old orphanage in the middle of nowhere. The orphanage was once a mental facility and now it's being used as an orphanage. However, the orphanage has few children left and, therefore Anna's job is pretty simple; she just has to oversee and maintain the facility. Initially, Anna is delighted with her new job, the surrounding of the orphanage is stunningly beautiful, and the old building has an interesting history. However, soon enough, she starts experiencing strange and eerie events within the walls of the mansion.

The movie's atmosphere is quite satisfying and it generates a great sense of creepiness. The setting of the movie is an old and abandoned mansion, where the horror takes place. It's a typical haunted house, which is always a perfect fit for a horror movie. Saint Ange provides an excellent backdrop and the director has made good use of the vast expanse of the mansion.

As the movie progresses, viewers start to unravel the dark history of the orphanage. Together with Anna, we see different hints and understandings of the past of the building. Soon, the mysteries start to unravel and we learn that there have been many other caretakers before Anna, and they all have mysteriously disappeared. The more Anna learns about the history of Saint Ange, the more she becomes convinced that the orphanage is haunted. Through the movie, the director uses suspense and misdirection very well.

Virginie Ledoyen delivers an excellent performance as Anna. She is a pretty and passionate woman yet afraid at the same time. Her character is well-written and well-rounded, and Virginie performs it with a great level of intensity. Lou Doillon does an excellent job of playing Helena, the last remaining child in the orphanage. She gives off an eerie vibe and is perhaps the most unsettling character in the movie. Finally, veteran actress Catriona MacColl plays a small but significant role in the film. Catriona brings her unique sense of screen presence and delivers a strong performance.

In conclusion, Saint Ange is a horror movie that is worth watching. It is a movie that will slowly but surely start to get under your skin. The director has done a fantastic job of creating a creepy atmosphere that draws viewers in, whilst also providing well-crafted characters who are designed to elicit audience empathy. The film's story has supernatural elements but is also grounded in reality, which makes it a much more nuanced suspense story with a deep sense of melancholic emotions. The film is well directed and has an excellent screenplay. It's a movie with strong performances, an engrossing and eerie atmosphere, and a deeply emotional core. The ending of the film is quite poignant and leaves a deep emotional impact. Overall, Saint Ange is a dark, moody yet mesmerizing film that is worth watching for someone who is a fan of slow-burn horror movies.
