In the midst of World War II, a group of Sergeant Joe Gunn (Humphrey Bogart), a tank commander, and his men, are left stranded in the Sahara desert after their tank is destroyed during a battle. They are of different races and nationalities, including a Briton, a Sudanese, and an Italian. They have only three days worth of water and supplies and their only hope for survival is to trek across the unforgiving landscape to reach an Allied stronghold 500 miles away.
As they travel across the desert, they come across a group of stranded Germans led by the ruthless Captain von Schletow (Hans Conried). The Germans are also low on supplies and water and are equally desperate to survive. The two groups temporarily team up to try and find an oasis that the Germans know of but had not yet reached. But when the Germans attack the Allied group, killing one of their own, the alliance dissolves and both groups continue their journey separately.
As they trek through the unforgiving desert, they face various challenges and obstacles. They have to deal with sandstorms, injuries, and dwindling supplies. At one point they come across an abandoned oil well and manage to extract oil to use as fuel for their vehicles. They also try their best to evade German soldiers who are on their tail.
Along the way, Sgt. Gunn forms a bond with Tambul (Rex Ingram), a Sudanese soldier in the group, and Emir (J. Carrol Naish), an Arab who used to work for the Italians but has now joined the Allied party. There is also romance between Cpl. Johnstone (Richard Nugent), a Briton, and Louise (Dan Duryea), a stranded Frenchwoman they come across in the desert.
The group faces numerous challenges and setbacks but eventually manages to reach the Allied stronghold, with German soldiers hot on their heels. In the end, they manage to destroy the German tank that was following them, with the help of Emir, who sacrifices his life in the process.
