Safety is a 2020 biographical sports film based on the true story of Ray McElrathbey, a college football player at Clemson University who faced numerous obstacles off the field while trying to provide a better life for himself and his younger brother, Fahmarr. The movie centres around Ray (played by Jay Reeves), a talented football player, who is awarded a scholarship to attend Clemson University in South Carolina. However, things take an unexpected turn when Ray's mother is sent to rehab, leaving him to take care of Fahmarr (played by Thaddeus J Mixson). With the help of his teammates, Ray tries to juggle his football duties, college classes, and take care of his younger brother without drawing the attention of the NCAA, which does not allow student-athletes to receive any extra benefits.

As Ray struggles to balance his personal and professional life, he gets support from his girlfriend Kaycee (played by Corinne Foxx), his coach (played by James Badge Dale), and a former Clemson linebacker Daniel (played by Matthew Glave). As the pressure builds, Ray makes a difficult decision that may jeopardize his future on the football field but will secure the future of his family.

The movie highlights the challenges that Ray faces off the football field, such as financial struggles, secretive living arrangements, and the constant pressure of taking care of his younger brother. Despite the numerous obstacles, Ray continues to pursue his dream of playing football and becoming successful.

Throughout the movie, the characters are shown to follow through on their commitments and to support one another through difficult times. Ray's relationships with Kaycee, his coach, and Daniel provide an emotional core to the story that demonstrates the need for people to help one another and create a positive community. The movie reinforces the idea that family is not just defined by blood but also by the people who care for one another.

The movie's setting is a familiar one for many college football fans, as it is set in and around Clemson University. Several scenes from the film were shot on location at the university, including game-day footage of Clemson playing Florida State, which added an additional layer of authenticity to the film. The cinematography captures the beauty of the university and the surrounding area, providing a picturesque backdrop for the story.

The acting in the movie is strong overall. Jay Reeves gives an excellent performance as Ray McElrathbey, portraying the character as both determined and vulnerable. Thaddeus J. Mixson is impressive as Fahmarr, displaying a range of emotions while realistically depicting the challenges of being a young child in difficult circumstances. The supporting cast, including James Badge Dale, Matthew Glave, and Corinne Foxx, give excellent performances that add depth to the film.

Overall, Safety is a thought-provoking film about one man's struggles and his determination to succeed despite overwhelming odds.
