In the 2012 film Safety Not Guaranteed, a trio of journalists embark on a quirky and sincere journey to investigate a classified ad, which reads "Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed." The journalists believe they've found the ultimate story, and soon are on their way to meet the mysterious individual who placed the ad.
As the group arrives in the small town where the ad was placed, they begin to uncover the truth behind the ad and its author, Kenneth Calloway (Mark Duplass). Kenneth is a socially awkward and enigmatic grocery store clerk who insists that he's figured out how to travel back in time. The main reporter, Jeff (Jake Johnson), quickly dismisses Kenneth and his claims, instead opting to pursue a romantic fling with an old flame in town. However, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) becomes fascinated with Kenneth and his story, and finds herself drawn into his world.
As the group spends more time with Kenneth, they begin to realize that he might not be as crazy as he initially seemed. Kenneth is deeply committed to his mission, and has devoted years of his life to building a time machine in his backyard. Through a series of heartfelt and humorous interactions, Darius and Kenneth grow closer, with Darius becoming a true believer in Kenneth's abilities.
However, as the group's visit draws to a close, tensions begin to rise as they realize that they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Kenneth's past trauma is revealed, as well as his intentions for time travel. Darius must grapple with her feelings for Kenneth while struggling to reconcile his situation with the real world. In the end, the group is left questioning what it truly means to believe in something, and what they are willing to risk in order to find out the truth.
Safety Not Guaranteed is a charming and heartfelt indie film that explores themes of love, loss, and the power of belief. Aubrey Plaza delivers a standout performance as Darius, a girl who is struggling to find her place in the world. Her deadpan humor and emotional depth bring a unique perspective to the film, and her chemistry with Duplass is palpable. Duplass gives a nuanced and convincing portrayal of a man grappling with his own reality, and his heartfelt performance is one of the highlights of the film.
The film's director, Colin Trevorrow, imbues the movie with a unique sense of whimsy and humor that keeps the narrative light and entertaining, even as it tackles heavy subject matter. Although the film ultimately raises more questions than it answers, it manages to provide us with a satisfying and hopeful conclusion that will leave viewers thinking long after the end credits roll.
Overall, Safety Not Guaranteed is a touching and entertaining film that explores the human desire for connection and the lengths we will go to for love and adventure. With its clever writing, standout performances, and unique direction, this indie gem is a must-see for fans of romantic comedies and sci-fi.
