"Safe at Home!" is a 1962 sports comedy directed by Walter Doniger and starring baseball legends Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris alongside veteran actor William Frawley. The premise of the movie revolves around a young boy named Hutch (Bobby Richardson) who idolizes Mantle and Maris and dreams of meeting them in person. Hutch's school is having a fundraiser in which the student who sells the most tickets to a Yankees game will win a visit with the two famous baseball players. Hutch is determined to win the contest, but he runs into a problem when he realizes that his father (Frawley) is vehemently opposed to anything related to baseball.
As Hutch tries to sell more tickets, he begins to make up wild stories about his supposed friendships with Mantle and Maris to convince others to buy them. When Hutch's father finds out what he's been up to, he decides to help his son out of a sticky situation by posing as a famous baseball scout and tricking Mantle and Maris into coming to Hutch's school.
The movie is notable for featuring Mantle and Maris as themselves, as well as for being filmed on location at Yankee Stadium. Mantle was arguably the most famous baseball player of the era, having won three MVP awards and playing in 16 All-Star games at the time of the movie's release. Maris was also a highly accomplished player, having broken Babe Ruth's single-season home run record in 1961 (a record that would stand for 37 years).
Despite the star power of Mantle and Maris, "Safe at Home!" was not a critical or commercial success, and it would be the only acting role for either player. The movie does offer a unique glimpse into the lives of two of baseball's biggest stars at the height of their fame, and it remains a charming and lighthearted film for sports fans of all ages.
Safe at Home! is a 1962 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 24 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.4.
