Rupkatha Noy is a Bengali drama film released in 2013 directed by Atanu Ghosh. The film wasn't just about the love story of a couple, but it was also about rediscovering oneself from an unexpected situation. The film starred the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee along with the talented Radhika Apte and Kaushik Sen. The story of Rupkatha Noy revolves around Amitava (Kaushik Sen), a successful corporate professional, who holds his work in high regard. His wife, Malini (Radhika Apte), is a homemaker who loves her husband but sometimes feels neglected by him. One day, Amitava receives an unexpected phone call that changes his life forever. The call informs him of his father's critical condition and he needs to get to the hospital as soon as possible. But, since he is away on official work, he cannot be there for his father in person.
While Amitava is grappling with the situation, he meets an old man, Sudhindra Bose (Soumitra Chatterjee), who is a retired school teacher. They both start talking about their lives, their thoughts, their desires, and everything in between. Sudhindra shares his life story about his love for a woman named Ismat (Raima Sen) and his unfulfilled love story. Amitava is fascinated by Sudhindra's story and decides to bring back the romance in Sudhindra's life.
Meanwhile, Malini also gets to know about Amitava's father's condition and decides to take matters into her own hands. She, along with a friend (Koneenica Banerjee), goes to the hospital to take care of Amitava's father. While looking after him, Malini undergoes a self-discovery journey herself.
The movie is divided into two parts, and both the parts beautifully convey the message of rediscovering oneself from an unexpected situation. The first half of the movie is filled with Sudhindra's love story, which is portrayed within the beautiful landscapes of Bengal. The narrative of his love story is so beautiful that it touches the heart of the viewers. Soumitra Chatterjee's acting is spot on, as he portrays Sudhindra Bose's character with ease, creating a beautiful rendition of a scared old man.
In the second half of the movie, Radhika Apte was able to deliver a show-stealing performance. Her character, Malini, showed how strong a woman can be in a situation of crisis. Her calm yet dominating presence draws the attention of the audience. Her character arc goes from being a dependent housewife to an independent and self-reliant individual.
Even though the movie revolves around three different characters, it is the story and direction that keeps everything glued together. Atanu Ghosh has done a fantastic job in directing the movie. The story flows seamlessly, and the scenes are shot beautifully, which makes it visually appealing.
The music of the film was composed by Debajyoti Mishra, and the cinematography was done by Soumik Haldar. Both Debajyoti and Soumik did an excellent job in adding the right emotions and visuals to the movie.
Overall, Rupkatha Noy is a beautiful movie, which keeps you engaged in its narrative until the very end. It is a movie that will make you smile, make you cry, and make you think about life. The performances of the lead cast, coupled with the beautiful direction, music, and cinematography, make it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates good cinema.
