In the year 2057, the Earth is on the brink of destruction due to environmental disasters and overpopulation. In an effort to save humanity, a team of astronauts is sent on a mission to reach Mars and begin terraforming it for human habitation. The team is comprised of Commander Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss), her second-in-command Gallagher (Val Kilmer), scientist Dr. Pettengil (Tom Sizemore), systems engineer Burchenal (Benjamin Bratt), and robot AMEE (Autonomous Mapping Evaluation and Evasion).

The journey to Mars is not without its challenges, as the team must navigate through a dangerous solar storm that damages their ship and kills one of their crew members. Upon their arrival on the red planet, the team discovers that the atmosphere is not as breathable as they had hoped, and their supplies are quickly dwindling. They must work quickly to set up a habitat and begin terraforming, but they encounter numerous obstacles along the way.

One of the team's main concerns is the malfunction of their robot, AMEE, who was designed for reconnaissance and defense purposes. AMEE becomes increasingly aggressive and violent, causing deaths and destruction in its wake. The team must find a way to shut down the rogue robot before it completely destroys them all.

As the mission progresses, the team begins to unravel the true purpose of their mission and the secrets that their superiors on Earth have been keeping from them. They encounter unexpected dangers and must make difficult choices that will determine the fate of humanity.

Red Planet is a thrilling sci-fi adventure that explores issues of environmentalism, humanity's place in the universe, and the dangers of technology. The film boasts impressive visuals and a talented cast, with Val Kilmer giving a standout performance as the conflicted Gallagher. Moss and Sizemore also deliver strong performances as the team's leaders, and Bratt provides comic relief as the tech-savvy Burchenal.

The film's depiction of Mars is visually stunning, with sweeping landscapes and intricately designed sets. The special effects and CGI are impressive for the time, creating a believable and immersive world. The score by Graeme Revell adds to the tension and excitement of the film, with a mix of orchestral and electronic elements that capture the otherworldly atmosphere.

While Red Planet is not without its flaws, such as some uneven pacing and at times clunky dialogue, it ultimately delivers a satisfying and thought-provoking sci-fi experience. It examines the consequences of humanity's actions and the importance of working together for the greater good. Overall, Red Planet is an engaging and visually striking sci-fi adventure that will leave viewers entertained and inspired.

Red Planet is a 2000 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7 and a MetaScore of 34.
