REC 3: Genesis is a Spanish horror film directed by Paco Plaza and released in 2012. This is the third installment of the REC franchise and features a new twist in story and style from the previous films. The film takes place at a wedding in a beautiful country house, where guests have gathered to celebrate the union of Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martn). The atmosphere is merry and everything seems to be going smoothly until a mysterious uncle, who seems to be infected by a strange virus, turns violent and attacks a guest. Chaos spreads quickly as more guests become infected, turning into bloodthirsty zombies.
Unlike the previous films which have the âfound footageâ style, REC 3: Genesis departs from this style and goes for a more conventional filming technique with a mix of handheld camera footage and traditional movie filming. This style change takes the audience out of the first-person perspective from the previous REC films and allows for a broader range of perspectives, including glimpses of what occurs at other parts of the wedding, behind the scenes and in other rooms of the house.
The film zeroes in on Clara and Koldo as they are separated at the start of the outbreak. Clara, still in her wedding gown, tries to find Koldo with the help of the guests who havenât turned into zombies, using a chainsaw and other weapons to defend themselves. Koldo goes off on his own mission, resolute on finding his wife and killing every zombie he encounters.
REC 3: Genesis is the origin story of the virus that plagues the wedding, as it explains why the zombie apocalypse started at the wedding in the first place. This backstory is given through the wedding videographer, who takes footage of the happy couple and their guests before everything goes wrong. The virus is linked to an occult marker kept in the basement of the country house. This adds a supernatural element to the story, which sets REC 3: Genesis apart from its predecessors.
The special effects and makeup used in the film are top-notch as the zombiesâ transformation is shown in gruesome detail, with teeth falling out of decaying mouths, and blood splattering on the guestsâ faces. Although there are moments of comedy to balance the horror, the gore is still present, giving a realistic portrayal of the apocalyptic scene.
The acting by the cast is also noteworthy, with Dolera and Martn as the exceptional leads. Their love story injects a romantic edge to the movie, humanizing the situation as they fight for their love during a time of utter chaos.
REC 3: Genesis is the perfect mix of horror and comedy with a twist in storytelling. The movie can be enjoyed on its own, but watch out for the twist ending as it becomes a set-up for the final installment in the franchise, REC 4: Apocalypse.
Overall, if youâre looking for a horror film with lots of blood, gore, and suspense, REC 3: Genesis will not disappoint. The film has a unique take on the genre as it balances horror, comedy, and romance flawlessly, making it a thrilling and exhilarating watch.
