Rebecca (2020) is a romantic drama thriller that was directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay by Jane Goldman, Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse. It is based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. The film features a star-studded cast of actors including Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott Thomas. The story is set in the 1930s and revolves around the young and naive protagonist played by Lily James, who is never given a name. We see her working as a paid companion to the wealthy Mrs. Van Hopper (Ann Dowd) in Monte Carlo. It is on this trip that she meets the dashing and rich Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer) who is mourning the death of his wife, Rebecca. As they spend more time together, they fall in love, and Maxim proposes marriage to her. She accepts and they marry and leave Monte Carlo, heading back to his family estate, Manderley, which is situated on the coast of Cornwall, England.

As soon as the couple reaches Manderley, his new bride becomes aware of Maxim's devotion to his deceased wife, Rebecca. The house is full of Rebecca's belongings and there are constant reminders of her throughout. The eerie housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas) who was also Rebecca's confidante, makes the young bride feel unwelcome by constantly comparing her to Rebecca and showing her around the corners and rooms where Rebecca lived. Mrs. Danvers seems to have a sinister agenda especially when she shows the young bride Rebecca's bedroom and encourages her to wear one of her dresses.

As the story progresses, the young bride begins to grow fearful of her position in the house and feels like she is living in Rebecca's shadow. She feels like the house is haunted by Rebecca's ghost which makes her feel uncomfortable and paranoid. As she tries to adapt to life at Manderley and win over the hearts of the staff, she is also drawn into the mystery of what really happened to Rebecca.

Rebecca is a beautifully shot and well-acted movie, that has an old-world charm and elegance to it. The costumes and sets are stunning and add to the overall beauty of the film. The standout performances were from Kristin Scott Thomas, who depicted the icy and calculating Mrs. Danvers with a sinister edge, and Lily James, who plays the young and vulnerable bride perfectly. The chemistry between Armie Hammer and Lily James was also outstanding, and their love story is heartwarming and touching.

The movie is a slow burn, and it takes its time in building up the suspense and tension. There are many twists and turns, and the storyline is filled with intrigue and mystery. The movie does a fantastic job in keeping the audiences guessing and on the edge of their seats.

Another standout aspect of the movie is the soundtrack which was composed by Clint Mansell. The music adds to the overall mood of the film and helps to create a sense of foreboding and mystery.

Overall, Rebecca is a beautifully crafted and well-executed movie. The storyline is engaging and captivating, and the performances are outstanding. Fans of historical romance and mystery will enjoy this film.
