In the year 2045, the world is in a state of chaos and ruin. The only escape from this grim reality is the OASIS, a virtual universe created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves behind a challenge for gamers all over the globe: find the hidden Easter egg within the OASIS, and the finder will inherit Halliday's fortune and control over the OASIS itself.

The film's protagonist is Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), an impoverished teenager from Columbus, Ohio.
