Rampant is a South Korean historical action film released in 2018, directed by Kim Sung-hoon and starring Hyun Bin, Seo Ji-hye, and Heo Sung-tae. The film takes place in the historical Joseon era (1392-1897), where the main character, Lee Chung (played by Hyun Bin), is the son of the King's concubine. Lee Chung was sent away from the palace at a young age to avoid any potential conflicts with the queen, who was jealous of his mother.

As the movie begins, Lee Chung returns to the palace after several years of living as a rebel. Upon his return, he discovers that a strange disease is spreading throughout the country. This mysterious disease turns people into zombie-like creatures at night, and they attack and feed on the living. As the disease spreads further, panic ensues, and the palace becomes besieged by hordes of zombies.

Lee Chung quickly realizes that the palace is ill-prepared for the zombie onslaught and sets out to find allies to help him take down the undead horde. He teams up with a group of warriors, including one skilled with firearms, and infiltrates an arms dealer's stronghold. They stock up on weapons and ammunition to protect themselves against the zombies and take the fight back to the palace.

Meanwhile, the Crown Prince, Lee Young (played by Kim Tae-woo), is facing his own challenges. As the King is ill and unable to rule, a group of nobles are jockeying for positions of power. This group includes Lee Chung’s half-brother, Lee Yoon (played by Jang Dong-gun), who wants to become the next King. Lee Young must navigate the treacherous world of politics while trying to hold off the zombie horde.

As the zombies overtake the palace, Lee Chung and his allies set up a barricade to try and hold them off. They also try to prevent the nobles from fleeing the palace, as they are needed to secure funds to purchase more weapons to fight the zombies. Despite their efforts, the zombies continue to spread throughout the palace, revealing that the undead epidemic is not merely a natural disaster but a sinister plot by someone with a diabolical agenda.

Rampant is not only an action-packed zombie movie, but it also explores political intrigue and family dynamics. The film has stunning visuals, including sweeping shots of the palace, and action sequences that are both thrilling and terrifying. Hyun Bin does an excellent job portraying Lee Chung, exemplifying the grace and athleticism required to be a skilled swordsman. Seo Ji-hye's character, a physician who provides crucial information about the origins of the disease, also shines in her role, providing a refreshing perspective on the otherwise male-dominated cast.

The movie also features some fantastic swordplay sequences, choreographed by Kim Jung-hwan. The action scenes are fast-paced and brutal, and the camera work conveys the ferocity and speed of the combat participants.

In closing, Rampant is an excellent addition to the zombie movie genre, and it stands out above other films due to its historical setting and political intrigue storyline. Director Kim Sung-hoon and his team have done an excellent job in delivering an engaging, thrilling, and thought-provoking film that will appeal not only to zombie enthusiasts but also to anyone who loves a well-crafted action movie with a twist.

Rampant is a 2018 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 1 minute. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.
