Rampage, released in 1963, is a film directed by Phil Karlson that stars Robert Mitchum, Elsa Martinelli, Jack Hawkins, and Sabu. This dramatic thriller is set in the African nation of Sierra Leone and follows the story of Harry Stanton (Robert Mitchum), a big-game hunter who is recruited to kill a man-eating lion that is terrorizing the locals.

The movie starts off with a thrilling sequence where a lion attacks and kills a native in a small Sierra Leone village. The villagers are in panic because this lion has been attacking and killing people for weeks now. A powerful and wealthy businessman, Sir Ronald Kirby (Jack Hawkins), hires Harry Stanton to track down and kill the lion. Harry, who was once a big-game hunter, has to overcome his past trauma with the lions, and accept the challenge.

Harry accepts the offer from Sir Ronald Kirby, who also provides him with a local guide, Juma (Sabu) and an assistant, Anna (Elsa Martinelli), who is a photographer. Throughout the movie, as Harry and his team trek through the jungle to find the man-eating lion, they face various obstacles, including a lack of food and water supply, and the risk of getting attacked by the animals of the wild.

As they progress through the journey, they come across different local tribes who are caught up in their own internal conflicts. Along the way, they meet the leader of the tribe, ‘King’ (Earl Cameron). The character King is a critical part of the story and serves as a guide to Harry and his team. King brings them to his tribe and introduces them to his people, who offer their hospitality to them.

As they get deeper into the jungle, the team discovers that it is not just one lion that is attacking the villages but three lions. They quickly realize that the situation is far more dangerous than they thought it would be. This realization makes the team more cautious and vigilant about their surroundings. They become more calculated about how they move and where they camp to avoid being in the path of the man-eaters.

The film is shot on location in Sierra Leone, and the jungle sequences are beautifully shot. The audience can feel the sweat, heat, and humidity of the African jungle. The wildlife scenes are nicely captured as well, with some exotic animals like gorillas and monkeys making an appearance in the movie.

Robert Mitchum, as Harry Stanton, plays a convincing character. He portrays a man who has been traumatized by his previous experience with lions, yet he is determined to overcome his fear and fulfill his duty of killing the man-eating lions. Elsa Martinelli plays Anna, the photographer who is documenting the journey for a national geographic-style publication. She brings in the necessary curiosity and femininity to the cast. Jack Hawkins, as Sir Ronald Kirby, plays the ambitious entrepreneur very well, whose work is more out of the need to be successful rather than humanitarian causes.

Overall, Rampage is an entertaining adventure that follows Harry Stanton and his team on their hunt for the man-eating lions. The movie does a great job of capturing the African jungle setting and its diverse wildlife, while also telling an engaging and thrilling story. The acting is solid, and the filmography is a blissful experience to watch. Rampage is a thrilling adventure that genre film lovers will enjoy.
