Raising Genius is a heartwarming comedy-drama that explores the complex nature of family dynamics and the struggles of children who are considered geniuses. Released in 2004, this film stars Justin Long as Hal, a 17-year-old boy who is a self-proclaimed genius with an IQ of 190. Hal, who is home-schooled by his mother and father, desperately wants to attend college so that he can further his education and expand his knowledge.

Wendie Malick plays the role of Hal's mother, Nancy, who is an overbearing and controlling parent who believes that Hal is destined for greatness. Her obsession with Hal's genius has put a strain on their relationship, and she is often at odds with her husband and Hal's sister, who want him to have a more normal childhood. Ed Begley Jr. plays the role of Hal's father, Hal Sr., who is more relaxed about his son's intelligence and is concerned about his well-being.

The film opens with Hal taking the SATs, where he scores a perfect score. Hal's parents are thrilled, and Nancy immediately begins to prepare Hal for college admissions. However, things take a turn when Hal's essay is rejected from every college he applied to. This rejection sends Nancy into a tailspin, and she becomes even more obsessed with ensuring that Hal attends college.

Against his parents' wishes, Hal befriends a girl from the local high school named Amber (played by Danica McKellar), who shares his love of science and astronomy. Amber and Hal's friendship quickly blossoms into a romance, and she helps him realize that there is more to life than just his intelligence. Together they explore the world around them and discover that life is full of surprises.

As the story progresses, we see the complexities of Hal's relationship with his family. His father, who is a laid-back environmentalist, wants Hal to enjoy his youth and not put too much pressure on himself. Hal's sister, Jeannie (played by Michele Mariana), is an artist who feels overshadowed by her brother's intelligence, but she still loves him and wants him to be happy. Despite their various opinions, Hal's family is supportive of him and wants what is best for him.

The film culminates in Hal's decision about whether to attend the college of his family's choosing or to follow his heart and pursue a different path. Hal's inner struggle is genuine, and the audience is left wondering what decision he will make.

Overall, Raising Genius is a heartwarming film that tells the story of a boy who is a genius but still struggles with the complexities of adolescence. It highlights the importance of family support and unconditional love, regardless of a child's IQ. The film's message is clear: intelligence is essential, but it's not the only thing that matters. Life is full of surprises, and it's up to each individual to find their own path.
