The movie revolves around the life of Varuna, a young woman suffering from dissociative identity disorder. The film begins with a young woman named Varuna (Nargis) leading a dual life. During the day, she is a demure and reserved woman who is engaged to be married to a wealthy man named Ramesh (Pradeep Kumar). However, at night, she transforms into a wild and carefree woman named Peggy who enjoys dancing and attending parties.
Varuna's dual personality creates problems for her and her family. Her mother is worried about her daughter's behavior and consults a psychiatrist who diagnoses her with dissociative identity disorder. He believes that the root cause of Varuna's condition is her traumatic childhood which has left a lasting impact on her.
In the absence of a cure for her condition, Varuna's family decides to keep her locked up during the night to prevent her from transforming. However, Varuna manages to escape and continues to lead her double life.
Things take a turn when Varuna meets a young man named Ramesh who falls in love with her. Ramesh is unaware of her condition and is perplexed by her strange behavior. However, he is determined to help her and convinces her to seek medical help.
Varuna finally agrees to undergo treatment and with Ramesh's support, she comes to terms with her condition. She eventually overcomes her dissociative identity disorder and merges her two personalities into one.
The film is a gripping take on mental health and explores the complexities of dissociative identity disorder. Nargis delivers an outstanding performance as Varuna/Peggy, effortlessly switching between the two personalities. The film also features some melodious songs composed by Shankar-Jaikishan that are still remembered today.
Raat Aur Din was one of the last films that Nargis acted in before she got diagnosed with cancer. The film won critical acclaim and Nargis was posthumously awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Varuna/Peggy in the film.
