Raabta is a 2017 Indian romantic drama film directed by Dinesh Vijan and marks his directorial debut. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput as Shiv, Kriti Sanon as Saira, and Jim Sarbh as Zakir and is produced by Homi Adajania, Bhushan Kumar, and Dinesh Vijan in association with T-Series, Maddock Films, and Jio Studios. Moreover, the movie features Deepika Padukone in a special appearance and Rajkummar Rao in guest role.
The film revolves around the story of Shiv and Saira, who meet each other accidentally while holidaying in Europe. They start to get drawn towards each other, but Saira suffers from nightmares related to a man who lived centuries ago. Later they discover, in their previous life, they were lovers in the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro. Shiv and Saira's love story gets entangled with the centuries-old story of Jilan, a prince of Mohenjo Daro, and his lady love Mayra.
The first half of the movie focuses on the love story between Shiv and Saira. They get to know each other while enjoying the vibrancy of Budapest. Shiv, being a happy-go-lucky person, tries to impress Saira in every possible way, and Saira falls for him gradually. The second half of the movie takes a turn when Saira starts having visions of another life with a different name in a different era. She starts questioning about her past life and discovers that she and Shiv were lovers in their previous life, where Jim Sarbhâs character Zakir is the antagonist.
The screenplay of the movie is intriguing, and the pace of the movie keeps the audience engaged. The plot is fresh and has several plot twists that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Kriti Sanon has done an excellent job, and her chemistry with Sushant is palpable. Sushant, as usual, gives a fine performance, completely surrendering himself to the role of Shiv. Jim Sarbh is phenomenal as Zakir, his cold, calculating performance makes the character stand out.
Music is one of the strong points of the movie, JAM8 has done an incredible job. Songs like "Main Tera Boyfriend," "Lambiyaan Si Judaiyaan," "Raabta Title Track" are the highlights of the album. The cinematography by Martin Preiss is impressive, and he successfully portrayed Budapest's beauty and elegance.
Deepika Padukoneâs cameo in the movie as a dancer in the title track of the movie is a boon to the movie. Her grace, poise, and charm makes the song more captivating. On the other hand, Rajkumar Rao's special appearance as a 324-year-old man was funny and fascinating.
Raabta is a movie that may leave the audience with mixed feelings. It carries an interesting concept but fails to deliver the impact it intended to, in execution. Nevertheless, the movie is worth a watch, and the chemistry between the lead pair is delightful. The movie may not be the best attempt at telling a rebirth story, but it has enough drama, romance, and action to entertain the audience.
