Queen & Slim is an intense and thought-provoking drama film that was directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe. This movie revolves around the story of two African-American individuals who are on a date that goes awry and ultimately leads to them becoming fugitives. Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) stars as Slim, a mild-mannered man who works as a retail employee. Jodie Turner-Smith (Nightflyers) plays Queen, an attorney with a no-nonsense attitude. The two meet each other for the first time at a diner, they are clearly not a match made in heaven - at least not at the start. However, as the night progresses, they begin to bond over their shared experiences of oppression and racism, and they start to fall for each other.
However, on their way home, they are pulled over by a white police officer who behaves aggressively towards Queen, despite the fact that she has committed no crime. In an act of self-defense, Slim intervenes and the confrontation turns violent, resulting in the police officer's death. Fearing for their lives, Queen and Slim decide to go on the run, knowing that they will never receive a fair trial if they are caught.
Thus, begins their unforgettable road trip, as they traverse across America in search of safety and freedom. Along the way, they meet several people who help them out, including Earl (Bokeem Woodbine), an old friend of Slim's who provides them with shelter and support. All the while, they strive to make a statement - they want to be more than just another tragic headline in the news, they want to be remembered as people who fought back against an unjust system.
The cinematography of the movie is breathtaking, with beautiful and vibrant settings throughout the various locations that they visit. As the journey progresses, we see their emotional journey as well. It's a refreshing take on a tired trope of an African-American couple on the run trope that we've seen done to death in Hollywood. The movie encompasses themes of race, justice, and love in a raw and honest portrayal that resonates even with those who may not have experienced such circumstances. There are moments of humor, beauty, and grace that make it an uplifting and empowering viewing experience despite its dark themes.
Kaluuya and Turner-Smith give flawless performances as the titular characters. There is an unmistakable connection between the two, and the chemistry they share is palpable. The dynamic of their relationship creates a sense of vulnerability that draws the audience in, making us root for them to succeed. Bokeem Woodbine, who makes a brief appearance in the movie, is captivating as Earl, a character who is almost larger than life.
The film's soundtrack is another highlight, featuring songs by some of the best artists like Lauryn Hill and Megan Thee Stallion. The music sets the tone and elevates the experience of the movie.
