Pure Luck is a 1991 film that follows the comedic adventure of a clumsy accountant named Eugene Proctor, played by Martin Short, and an experienced detective named Raymond Campanella, played by Danny Glover, who are brought together to locate a wealthy businessman's missing daughter. Eugene is an unlucky individual who is often plagued by misfortune. He has a tendency to get involved in mishaps that leave him in ridiculous and bizarre situations. However, when a wealthy businessman approaches him, requesting his help in locating his daughter, who has gone missing in Mexico, Eugene unwittingly becomes involved in a larger-than-life investigation that puts his awkwardness to the test. Despite his lack of confidence, Eugene is paired with the experienced detective Campanella, and together, they embark on an outrageous adventure to find the missing daughter.
Initially, things do not go as planned when the wealthy businessman's daughter, Valerie Barksdale, played by Shelia Kelley, goes missing in the midst of a vacation in Mexico. The businessman's security team is at a loss, and he decides to bring in his accountant Eugene, believing that his luck in life might prove useful in tracking down the missing girl. Eugene is hesitant at first, but with the encouragement of his boss and the offer of an all-expense paid vacation in Mexico, he accepts the daunting task of finding the missing heiress.
After arriving in Mexico, Eugene and Campanella begin a chaotic search for Valerie, involving hilarious and unorthodox methods of investigation. Despite the language barrier, culture shock, and overwhelming obstacles, Eugene and Campanella manage to follow the clues that ultimately lead to the girl's location. However, their plan changes when they discover that their prime suspect is also missing. As they continue the search for both the girl and their primary suspect, they endure multiple obstacles, including getting arrested and escaping a dangerous group of guerrilla fighters.
Throughout the movie, Martin Short's comedic portrayal of Eugene's unlucky streaks is both entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Danny Glover's performance as a confident detective provides an excellent contrast to Eugene's hapless personality. Sheila Kelley, who plays Valerie, is the missing link that brings the two together, and her story adds an element of intrigue to the already entertaining plot.
Overall, Pure Luck is a hilarious comedy filled with twists, turns, and unexpected moments. The film's cast shines in their individual roles, and the comedic chemistry between Short and Glover is a standout. It's a lighthearted, laugh-out-loud movie that is perfect for anyone looking for a good comedy. If you enjoy action-comedies, this movie is certainly worth watching.
