Pudhupettai is a 2006 Tamil language gangster film directed by Selvaraghavan and starring Dhanush, Sneha, and Sonia Agarwal. The film is set in the backdrop of the underworld of Chennai, and it follows the rise of a small-time gangster named Kokki Kumar (Dhanush) to the top of the organized crime world. The film begins with Kokki Kumar's childhood, where he grows up in the slums of Chennai with his widowed mother and younger sister. Kumar's mother dies when he is still young, leaving him to take care of his sister. He becomes a rowdy and starts small-time extortion and petty crime to make ends meet. In due time, he becomes part of a gang and starts doing bigger crimes.

The story takes a turn when Kumar meets the love of his life, Krishnaveni (Sneha), and he decides to turn over a new leaf. He tries to leave his criminal past behind and start a new life with Krishnaveni. However, the fate has other plans for him. As he tries to escape his past, Kumar becomes embroiled in the bloody underworld of Chennai.

The movie is a realistic portrayal of the gangster life in Chennai. It shows the nexus between the politicians, police, and organized crime. It also depicts the power of loyalty and betrayal in the dark world of crime. Moreover, the film showcases the impact of poverty and desperation that forces people to choose a life of crime.

The acting of Dhanush is the highlight of the movie. He perfectly portrays the character of Kokki Kumar, from a naive young man to a ruthless gangster. Sneha also gives an impressive performance as Krishnaveni, a college student who falls in love with Kumar. Sonia Agarwal, who plays the role of Padma, does justice to her character, a prostitute who becomes Kumar's ally.

The film's music, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, is one of the best aspects of the movie. The songs perfectly blend with the storyline and add to the overall dark tone of the film. The tracks "Oru Naalil" and "Enga Area" have become extremely popular among the Tamil audience.

Selvaraghavan's direction is effective, and he presents a grim, gritty, and realistic view of the underworld. The movie's dialogues are sharp, and they add depth to the storyline. The cinematography by Arvind Krishna is outstanding, capturing the squalor, dirt, and poverty of Chennai's slums. He also manages to showcase the violence and bloodshed in the movie in a realistic way.

Overall, Pudhupettai is a must-watch for anyone who loves gangster films. It is an excellent piece of filmmaking that shows the darker and grittier side of life in Chennai. The film proves that Dhanush is not just a superstar with outstanding acting abilities, but he is also a versatile actor who can shine in any role.
