Protocol is a 1984 American comedy film, directed by Herbert Ross and starring Goldie Hawn, Chris Sarandon, Richard Romanus among others. The movie follows the story of Sunny Davis, a quirky Washington-based cocktail waitress who inadvertently becomes involved in international affairs when she saves the life of a visiting Arab dignitary.

Sunny is a carefree, vivacious and hardworking girl, but her life changes when she is fired from her job. one night, she meets Michael Ransome, a good-looking attorney who is the nephew of Senator Halstrom. He invites her to a party, and things take an unexpected turn when she bumps into Mezzamorta, a visiting Arab dignitary whose life she ends up saving after he chokes on a piece of food. Her act of heroism catches the attention of the media, and soon, Sunny becomes a national celebrity.

Senator Halstrom sees an opportunity in Sunny's newfound fame, and he arranges for her to be enlisted as an ambassador to the Middle East to smooth over the political implications of her actions. But Sunny is not ready for such a position, and her appointment causes a stir among the diplomatic circles. She receives hostile treatment from the other ambassadors and is followed by a sinister CIA agent, Jack Godwin, who is convinced that Sunny's appointment is a part of a sinister scheme that could plunge the country into turmoil.

Soon, Sunny finds herself in the midst of an international conspiracy involving ruthless arms dealers, corrupt politicians, and CIA agents. But she refuses to be intimidated by the dangerous games being played around her and decides to get to the bottom of things. Along the way, she meets Ben, a journalist who wants to help her uncover what is really going on.

Despite being in over her head, Sunny surprises herself and others with her ability to navigate the complex political waters of Washington. She defies expectations, wins over the Gulf dignitaries with her "y'all" accent, and manages to expose the corrupt dealings of the politicians and their accomplices.

The movie's humor is on point, and Goldie Hawn's performance is impeccable. Her charismatic portrayal of Sunny and her infectious zest for life make it hard not to root for her, even when she finds herself in tough situations. Chris Sarandon, who plays Michael Ransome, is also impressive as the charming and debonair attorney who helps Sunny on her journey.

The movie's strengths lie in how it handles serious topics such as corruption and arms dealing with a light touch, making it easier for viewers to access and understand the issues. Additionally, the film's focus on a female protagonist trying to navigate and succeed in a male-dominated field is both timely and empowering.

Overall, Protocol is an engaging and entertaining political comedy that offers a refreshing view of the political landscape of the 1980s. Its cast is wonderful, its story is intriguing, and its humor is satisfying. It's a must-watch for anyone who enjoys watching a well-executed political satire.
