Princess of Mars is a film adaptation of the first book in the "Barsoom" series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The story follows the character of John Carter (Antonio Sabato Jr.), a former Confederate Army captain who finds himself suddenly transported to the planet Mars. There, he discovers a hostile environment where multiple factions of warring clans are fighting for control of the planet's dwindling resources.
As he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings, Carter encounters the Tharks, a group of tall, green-skinned warriors who take him under their wing. Their leader, Tars Tarkas (Matt Lasky), sees potential in Carter and encourages him to train in the art of war to help the Tharks in their battles against their enemies. Along the way, Carter also meets the beautiful Martian princess Dejah Thoris (Traci Lords), whom he falls in love with and must save from the clutches of the villainous Sab Than (Chacko Vadaketh).
Princess of Mars combines elements of science fiction, fantasy, and action-adventure to create an entertaining and thrilling movie. The film's special effects are impressive, particularly in its portrayal of the Martian landscape and creatures. The Tharks are brought to life through impressive CGI, which allows them to move and interact with their surroundings in a convincing manner. The various fight scenes throughout the movie are also well choreographed, featuring a mix of hand-to-hand combat and futuristic weaponry.
In terms of acting, Antonio Sabato Jr. delivers a solid performance as the film's protagonist, John Carter. He perfectly captures the character's sense of determination and courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Meanwhile, Traci Lords brings a regal presence to her role as Dejah Thoris, portraying the character as both vulnerable and strong-willed. Matt Lasky's portrayal of Tars Tarkas is also noteworthy, as he manages to inject his character with both humor and dignity.
One of the strengths of Princess of Mars is its adherence to the source material. Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series is considered a classic of the science fiction genre, and the film remains faithful to the original story. Many of the characters, creatures, and locations from the books are featured in the movie, and the filmmakers have done an excellent job of bringing them to life while staying true to the author's vision.
Overall, Princess of Mars is an enjoyable and exciting movie that offers a fresh take on a beloved science fiction classic. It boasts strong performances, impressive special effects, and a gripping story that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Fans of the original Barsoom series should appreciate the film's commitment to the source material, while newcomers will find themselves drawn into the imaginative and compelling world of John Carter and his adventures on the Red Planet.
