Possession is a 1981 French horror film that shows how insane some people can be. The film shows this since it can dawn on someone that, even when you think you know somebody, sometimes you only see what they want you to see instead of their true selves. When Mark is away on a secret business trip and returns home, his wife Anna tells him that she wants a divorce. Even though Anna denies that there is someone else, Mark keeps trying to fix their marriage even though she just plain wants out of it. Although he would rather go with his plan, he gives her their apartment and their young son, Bob.

Mark goes to visit Anna and Bob at their apartment, but he finds that Bob hasn't been cared for by Anna in a while. Mark uses this opportunity to try and get closer to Anna since his obsession is growing. Mark stays at the apartment over night with Anna and Bob, but he finds out that Anna only plans to leave in the middle of the night.

Mark was right about his suspicions; Anna's lover named Heinrich called Mark telling him that Anna is with him. The next day, Mark meets Bob's teacher for the first time who strikingly resembles Anna, but their demeanor is different. A jealous Mark finds out Heinrich's number and where he lives, so that he can pay him a visit, however, Heinrich tries to make up lies saying he never called and that he wasn't even with her at the time.

Mark goes back to Bob and Anna's apartment all bloody, and attempts to get an answer out of Anna about where she has been going. Mark and Anna get increasingly more violent each time they see each other; Mark beats her and she tries to kill herself by cutting her neck, but Mark tends to her wounds. Her wound does not prevent her from going to her secret place, and this leads Mark to the idea of hiring a private investigator to follow her.

The private investigator is stunned when he finds her at her own apartment, and that there is a mysteriously growing creature in her room with her, and Anna kills him to shut him up. Mark's obsession with Anna begins to wane because Mark is starting a relationship with Helen, her look alike. The PI's lover goes to look for him at Anna's apartment and suffers the same fate as his lover after finding the creature.

As Anna keeps coming back from her secret place, her behavior is drastically changing. When she leaves, Mark gives Heinrich her apartment address, which leaves Heinrich bloody when he sees the creature, but he had the opportunity to escape. Heinrich tells Mark about what he has seen and Mark murders him.

When Mark returns home to the apartment with Bob, he finds Margie dead outside. Despite that he suspects Anna of being her killer, he tries to rekindle their relationship until she leaves again. Anna is seen having sex with the creature again after she leaves Mark. Later, Heinrich's mother finds his lifeless body and commits suicide because she is horrified with the loss of her son.

Later, Mark finds out he is being followed by the police and kills an officer. He gets the police to lose his trail, but he is found by Anna who tries to kill him first with her creature. She is prevented from doing this when police officers shoot both of them and they later die by committing suicide. The creature is left defenseless and seeks the aid of a Margie look alike nearby.

As if Bob senses what has happened to his parents, he tells Helen not to answer door even though she does. From a distance, the sound of explosions, sirens, and planes fill the apartment. Bob rushes to the bathroom and makes himself drown, while Helen is unaware of the creature that is watching her close by.
