Pickaxe is a 2014 horror film that centers around a group of friends who decide to go on a snowmobiling trip in the mountains. However, their vacation quickly turns into a nightmare when they discover that they are being stalked by a mysterious killer. The film opens with a group of friends arriving at a cabin in the mountains for a fun weekend of snowmobiling. The group consists of a diverse group of personalities, including the rugged and charismatic Jess (Tiffany Shepis), the reserved and introspective Tim (A. Michael Baldwin), and the comically brash Sal (Sal Governale).
As the friends settle in for the night, they hear strange noises outside the cabin and begin to suspect that they are not alone in the wilderness. The next day, they set out on their snowmobiles and quickly become lost in the vast expanse of snow-covered mountains.
As they struggle to find their way back to the cabin, they encounter a series of strange and unsettling events. One friend goes missing, and the others begin to realize that they are being followed by a mysterious figure in a hooded cloak.
As tensions rise and paranoia sets in, the group begins to turn on each other, suspecting that one of them might be the killer. But as the bodies start to pile up, they realize that their situation is far more dire than they ever could have imagined.
The film's pacing is tight and intense, with director Jeremy Sumrall doing an excellent job of building tension and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The snowy mountain landscapes provide a haunting and atmospheric backdrop that adds to the film's overall sense of unease.
The acting is also strong, with Tiffany Shepis delivering a standout performance as the tough and resourceful Jess. She brings a much-needed sense of levity to the film with her sarcastic wit and no-nonsense attitude.
A. Michael Baldwin also delivers a solid performance as the brooding and introspective Tim, who serves as the film's moral compass. His quiet intensity provides a nice counterbalance to Sal Governale's over-the-top comedic antics.
Ultimately, Pickaxe is a solid entry in the horror genre that delivers plenty of thrills and chills. While it may not break any new ground in terms of story or scares, it is a well-made and entertaining film that horror fans are sure to enjoy.
