Set in the 1980s, Perry Mason Returns is a legal drama movie that follows the legendary defense attorney, Perry Mason (played by Raymond Burr), as he returns from his retirement to defend an old friend Della Street (played by Barbara Hale) who is accused of murder. Alongside Perry, his trusted assistant Ken Malansky (played by William Katt) also joins the legal team to help crack the case and prove Della's innocence.
The movie starts on a somber note, with Perry Mason attending the funeral of his former secretary, Paul Drake Jr. It is at the funeral that he meets his old friend and colleague Della Street, who is now the head of a prominent advertising agency. However, things take a dark turn when Della is accused of murdering her accountant, who was embezzling money from her company.
Perry Mason, convinced of Della's innocence, takes up her case and starts his investigation. With the help of Ken Malansky and his team of investigators, Perry uncovers several leads that could exonerate Della. However, as the case progresses, more evidence piles up against Della, and it seems like Perry might not be able to save her from a life behind bars.
As the trial proceeds, Perry Mason's legal acumen and his razor-sharp wit are on full display. He cross-examines witnesses, raises objections, and argues in front of the judge with utmost confidence, leaving no stone unturned. His legal prowess is matched by his moral integrity, as he refuses to back down in the face of numerous setbacks and even death threats.
The chemistry between Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale is one of the highlights of the movie. The two share an undeniable bond that has developed over the years of working together, and their on-screen chemistry shines through in each scene they share. William Katt's character, Ken Malansky, also provides a fresh perspective to the classic Perry Mason formula. He is the younger, modern foil to Perry's old-school charm and brings a level of levity to the movie that keeps it from getting too dark and depressing.
The movie's pacing is well-done, and the tension keeps building throughout the runtime. Despite being an older film, Perry Mason Returns manages to keep the audience engaged and invested in the story until the very end. The movie's climax is suitably dramatic and satisfying, and it ties up all the loose ends in a neat and tidy package.
Overall, Perry Mason Returns is an excellent legal drama that is a perfect tribute to the classic TV series that it is based on. Raymond Burr's performance as Perry Mason is exceptional, and he effortlessly slips back into the role that he made famous in the 1950s. The supporting cast, especially Barbara Hale and William Katt, provide excellent support, and the chemistry between the trio is impeccable. The story is well-written, and the pacing keeps the audience engaged throughout the movie. If you are a fan of legal dramas, then Perry Mason Returns is a must-watch.
