As Hollywood's first child star, Baby Peggy (born Peggy-Jean Montgomery) was a household name in the 1920s. She starred in dozens of films, including the 1924 adventure flick Peg o' the Mounted. The movie follows Peggy as she plays the titular character, a young girl who dreams of becoming a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. Her father (played by Bert Sterling) is a member of the force, and she idolizes him and his comrades.
When her father is falsely accused of a crime, Peg sets out to clear his name. Along the way, she proves her own bravery by rescuing a kidnapped child and capturing the true culprit.
Peg o' the Mounted was notable for its impressive stunts, performed by both Baby Peggy and her horse. In one scene, she jumps onto the back of a moving train from her horse, a feat that was actually performed by the young actress herself.
The film also features some stunning Canadian scenery, as well as a cast of memorable characters. Jack Earle plays the villainous Baroni, a criminal mastermind responsible for the crime that Peg's father is accused of. Peg's loyal dog, Brownie, is also a scene-stealer.
Despite being just six years old at the time of filming, Baby Peggy is a natural onscreen. Her confident and fearless demeanor make her character's heroics seem believable, and her expressive face is a joy to watch.
Peg o' the Mounted was a commercial success upon its release, and cemented Baby Peggy's status as a box office draw. However, her career was short-lived - by the age of eight, she had retired from the film industry.
Today, Peg o' the Mounted is remembered as a charming relic from a bygone era of filmmaking. Though some elements of the movie may seem dated to modern audiences, it remains a fascinating glimpse into the early days of Hollywood and a testament to Baby Peggy's talent.
