Pack of Lies is a tense and gripping drama set in 1960s London, based on the play by Hugh Whitemore. The film follows the lives of Bob and Barbara Jackson (played by Alan Bates and Ellen Burstyn), a middle-aged couple living a quiet and unremarkable life in a suburban neighborhood. However, their lives are turned upside down when they are asked by their close friend and neighbor, Helen Schaefer (played by Teri Garr), to assist in a covert police operation.

Helen reveals to the Jacksons that her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Peter Kroger (played by Sammi Davis and Daniel Gerroll), who they have known for years, are not who they say they are. In reality, they are deep-cover KGB agents working for the Soviet Union. The police need the Jacksons' help to set up surveillance on the Krogers without alerting them to their suspicions.

As the Jacksons become more deeply involved in the operation, they realize the heavy toll it takes on their family and friendships. Bob is torn between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to his friends, while Barbara struggles to come to terms with the betrayal of her closest confidante. Meanwhile, the Krogers appear to be living a completely normal life, oblivious to the fact that their cover is about to be blown.

Pack of Lies is a masterclass in tension and suspense, expertly building to a nail-biting climax. The film is held together by strong performances from its cast, particularly Burstyn, Garr, and Davis, all of whom deliver nuanced and complex performances.

Burstyn is particularly impressive as Barbara, conveying the character's sense of confusion, betrayal, and despair in a subtle and heart-wrenching way. Garr also shines as Helen, portraying her as a woman wracked with guilt and uncertainty, torn between her loyalty to her friends and her duty to her country.

At its core, Pack of Lies is a meditation on loyalty, betrayal, and the lengths to which people will go to protect those they love. The film asks difficult and uncomfortable questions about the nature of friendship and trust, and whether it is ever truly possible to know another person.

Overall, Pack of Lies is a thought-provoking and emotionally gripping drama, expertly crafted and featuring superb performances from its cast. It is a must-see for fans of tense and engrossing thrillers, and an excellent example of how a stage play can be successfully adapted for the screen.

Pack Of Lies is a 1987 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9.
