Out of Depth is a British crime drama movie set in the late 1990s, directed by Simon Marshall and released in 2000. The movie stars Sean Maguire as Del, a young drug dealer who gets in over his head after his business partner and mentor, Gavin (Danny Midwinter), is murdered by a notorious gangster named Kemp (Nicholas Ball). The story begins with Del and Gavin, two small-time drug dealers, trying to make a quick profit by stealing a large batch of ecstasy pills from a group of Dutch drug smugglers. However, their plan goes awry when they are ambushed by Kemp's henchmen, who kill Gavin and take the drugs. Del narrowly escapes and goes into hiding.
One year later, Del is still haunted by Gavin's death and has become a heavy drug user. He receives a surprise visit from Kemp, who offers him a chance to work for him as a drug courier. Del initially refuses, but Kemp threatens to harm his family if he doesn't comply. Del reluctantly agrees and begins working for Kemp, using his drug connections to move large batches of cocaine and heroin across the city.
As Del gets deeper into the criminal underworld, he struggles to keep his addiction under control and his moral compass intact. He forms an uneasy alliance with Kemp's right-hand man, Ronnie (Richard Roundtree), who tries to protect him from Kemp's violent temper and unstable behavior. Del also develops a romantic relationship with Kemp's girlfriend, Stacey (Lindsey Coulson), which further complicates his situation.
As Del becomes more involved in Kemp's operations, he begins to suspect that there is a rat in the organization who is feeding information to the police. He becomes paranoid and fearful for his life, especially after a close call with one of Kemp's enemies. Del tries to make a deal with the police, hoping to get out of the criminal life and start a new life with Stacey. However, his plan backfires, and he finds himself in even more danger than before.
Out of Depth is a gritty and intense movie that explores the dark side of the drug trade and the consequences of getting in too deep. The movie's strengths lie in its strong performances, particularly from Sean Maguire, who convincingly portrays Del's descent into addiction and despair. Danny Midwinter also shines in his limited screen time as Gavin, Del's doomed partner.
The movie's pacing is deliberate and methodical, building tension and suspense as Del's situation becomes more perilous. The cinematography and production design effectively convey the seedy urban landscape and the characters' bleak existence. The soundtrack, featuring 90s Britpop and electronica, adds to the movie's moody atmosphere.
Overall, Out of Depth is a well-crafted crime thriller that offers a gripping and realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld. It's a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
