In the 2013 movie Orbit Ever After, we witness the journey of young love as a teenage boy named Nigel, played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, falls in love with the mysterious girl who orbits the earth. Set in a futuristic world where everyday life happens on space stations orbiting the planet, Nigel's character is part of a family who run a small repair shop on the station. Despite being surrounded by his family and a plethora of other people, Nigel is lonely and feels that there is more to life than just his mundane existence in space.
One day, Nigel is out on a spacewalk when his tether breaks, sending him flying off into the abyss. As he struggles to get his bearings, he spots a young girl drifting through space, attached to a similar tether. The girl, named Lily (played by newcomer Zoe Tayler), is also adrift in space and the two make contact.
From this chance meeting, Nigel becomes consumed with thoughts of Lily and sets out to find a way to see her again. The only problem is that Lily's family is part of an exclusive community on a space station that is off-limits to Nigel and his kind. Despite this, Nigel makes it his mission to find a way to see Lily and starts experimenting with ways to break into the exclusive station.
One of the people who he turns to for help is a quirky inventor who lives on their home station, a character named Mr. Plywood, played by Mackenzie Crook. Plywood is a brilliant inventor who is always on the lookout for a new challenge, and Nigel's quest to see Lily provides him with just that. Together, the two set out to create a contraption that will allow Nigel to break into the other station undetected and see Lily.
As Nigel works on his mission, he also deals with the everyday struggles of being a teenager, including being picked on by the school bully and dealing with the over-protectiveness of his family. He also comes to learn more about Lily's life, which is surrounded by drama and secrets. Despite these struggles, Nigel is determined to see Lily and does not let anything get in his way.
The movie is directed by Jamie Stone and has a runtime of just under 20 minutes. It is a beautiful and whimsical tale of the journey of young love and the lengths that people will go to be with the person they love. The film is notable for its beautiful visuals, which are reminiscent of classic science-fiction films. The use of color is particularly striking, with the different space stations having their own distinct color palettes.
Overall, Orbit Ever After is a charming and delightful film that will leave audiences feeling inspired and hopeful. It is a simple story, but one that is executed with great care and attention to detail. The wonderful performances of the actors, including Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Mackenzie Crook, help to bring the story to life and create a magical world in which anything is possible.
