Only Mine is a 2019 American psychological thriller directed by Michael Civille and written by Matthew Stuecken and Chris Hutton. The movie features the story of a young woman, Julie, played by Amber Midthunder, who is the only survivor of a brutal attack from her ex-boyfriend David, played by Brett Zimmerman. After several years David escapes from prison to find and kill Julie. Julie is forced to try to save herself from being murdered by David and also from being committed to a mental institution when no one believes her that David is alive and chasing her.
The story begins with Julie or 'Jules' as her boyfriend, Michael, refers to her, driving her car on a dark road, with a bouquet of white flowers by her side for her engagement party to her college sweetheart, Michael, played by Brett Zimmerman. Suddenly, a dark figure leaps in front of her car, causing her to swerve off the road and hit a tree. When she wakes up in the hospital, she learns that Michael had died in the accident. Devastated, Jules tries to move on with her life turning to alcohol and drugs to escape the pain.
A year after the accident Jules receives a phone call from a strange man, David, who insists that he is her ex-boyfriend, and that he had not died in the car accident as she believed. Scared and convinced that David poses a threat to her, Jules asks her friend, Lisa, played by Claudia Ferri, to investigate the matter. Lisa eventually confirms that David is alive and had been in prison for assault and attempted murder. Lisa helps Jules change her name and move to a new city in a bid to elude David's watchful eyes, and hopefully to move on. However, David has been released from prison and is now on a mission to find Jules and take revenge on her for testifying against him in court.
Only Mine explores the themes of isolation, betrayal, obsession, and murder, bringing to light the horrendous consequences of domestic violence. The movie keeps audiences on edge with the constant tension created throughout the narrative. Jules is subjected to relentless stalking and harassment from David who never stops hunting for her. Although the movie feels overdramatized at times, it manages to sustain suspense throughout the story.
Amber Midthunder is the film's standout performer with her stunning performance as Jules. She effectively captures the wide range of emotions that Jules deals with after the horrific accident, making us completely invested in her journey. Brett Zimmerman, on the other hand, delivers a solid performance as the creepy and manipulative David. He portrays the character with effortless ease, making the audience despise his every move.
The film boasts of a well-written plot with a number of twists that keep the audience guessing. The plot is not only fast-paced but also generates suspense, conveying the claustrophobic feeling of Jules being trapped in an endless loop of David chasing her. The cinematography is also impressive, adding to the intense and threatening atmosphere of the movie.
Despite being a well-crafted thriller, Only Mine is not perfect. The film tends to be overly gruesome and brutal at times, derailing the plot and making it feel gratuitous. Moreover, the movie's ending comes across as somewhat rushed, with certain plot points left unclear or unexplained. However, these minor flaws do not overshadow the excellent performances and script that deliver on most fronts.
In conclusion, Only Mine is a chilling and suspenseful thriller that manages to hold the audience's attention from start to finish. Its brilliant cast and well-written plot make for an exciting watch, cementing the film as a must-watch for fans of the genre. With its themes of power and control, the movie reminds us of the horrors of domestic violence and underlines the importance of speaking out against it.
