Olympic Dreams is a comedy-drama film released in 2019 directed by Jeremy Teicher. The movie is set in the winter Olympics held in PyeongChang, South Korea, that depicts the life of athletes in the Olympic Village, their experiences, and their struggles. The story follows a young American cross-country skier named Penelope (Alexi Pappas) who is competing in her first Olympic Games, and a volunteer dentist, Ezra (Nick Kroll), who meets her and becomes intrigued by her. Ezra had come to the Olympics with his team, but due to his lack of skills, he gets assigned to work as a volunteer dentist.
Penelope has one thing on her mind-- winning a gold medal. She has trained for years and has put all of her focus and attention into the Games. However, something is still missing from her life, and she cannot seem to figure out what it is.
Ezra, on the other hand, has a lot of free time in the village as he is alone most of the time. He becomes intrigued by Penelope and starts to spend more time with her, hoping to alleviate his boredom.
As the two of them start to get to know each other, they both begin to realize that they have a lot in common. They both understand the pressure of performing in front of millions of people and dealing with the expectations of others. However, they also begin to see that despite the pressure, they are able to enjoy the games and have fun along the way.
A significant part of the movie is the way the storylines intertwine between Penelope and Ezra, and the other athletes in the village. One of those athletes is Gus (Gus Kenworthy), a freestyle skier that has come to the Games with a different type of pressure. Gus is one of the few openly gay athletes in the village, and he is trying to become the first ever athlete to win a medal at the Summer and Winter Olympics.
As the movie unfolds, Penelope, Ezra, and Gus all face various challenges and personal struggles that test their physical and mental strength. They are forced to confront their fears, doubts and anxieties, and they all come out stronger for it.
Overall, Olympic Dreams is a heart-warming story about friendship, self-discovery, and the importance of enjoying the journey, not just the destination. The film shows that, whether you're an athlete at the Olympics or an average person living your life, everyone faces challenges, but it's how you deal with them that truly defines who you are.
Olympic Dreams is a 2020 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 23 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.8 and a MetaScore of 55.
