Okka Ammayi Thappa is a 2016 Telugu-language heist-thriller film directed by Rajasimha Tadinada and starring Sundeep Kishan and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. The film also features Ravi Kishan, Ali, and Ajay in supporting roles. Produced by Anji Reddy, the film's music is composed by Mickey J Meyer. The film revolves around a young couple, Krishna (Sundeep Kishan) and Mango (Nithya Menen), who get caught up in a high-stakes heist. The story takes place on Hyderabad's iconic flyover, which stretches for miles and plays a major role in the film's plot. Krishna is a happy-go-lucky guy who works as a road side Romeo in Hyderabad. Mango is a radio jockey who falls head over heels in love with Krishna's personality on the radio. They meet each other accidentally and fall in love. However, just when they think that everything is fine, they get stuck on Hyderabad's flyover on a scorching hot day.
The flyover is closed for a VIP's convoy and the traffic has come to a standstill. In the midst of this traffic jam, a gang of robbers led by Ravi Kishan hijack a government ambulance with a patient on board. Soon, they realize that their original target, a truck carrying millions of rupees in black money, is stuck on the same flyover. They decide to barge into the truck and escape with the money, but their plan goes awry when they cannot open the truck. The robbers take Mango and Krishna hostage, threatening to kill them if they do not receive the money.
With no other option, Krishna and Mango must come up with a way to save themselves and stop the robbers. They use their wits and resourcefulness to hatch a plan that will allow them to outsmart the robbers and escape with their lives. The entire film forms on this flyover from late afternoon to early morning with an exceptional screenplay.
As the plot unfolds, we get to see the various characters in the film go through their own struggles and challenges. Ajay plays the role of an honest police officer who risks his life to save the hostages. Ali and Thagubothu Ramesh provide some much-needed comic relief in the midst of all the action and tension. Nithya Menen delivers a brilliant performance as Mango, who is not just a damsel in distress, but a strong-willed woman who is not afraid to fight for her life. Sundeep Kishan also delivers a commendable performance as Krishna, who realizes his own worth in a time of crisis.
The film's cinematography by Chota K. Naidu is also worth a mention, as he manages to capture the flyover's various moods and colors beautifully. The action sequences are well choreographed and keep you on the edge of your seat. Mickey J Meyer's music compliments the film's narrative, especially the soothing song "Ola Olaala Ala".
Overall, Okka Ammayi Thappa is a well-made thriller that keeps you engaged from start to finish. The film's intriguing premise and brilliant execution make it a must-watch for fans of the heist genre. The film was a moderate success at the box office, but it did receive critical acclaim for its unique story and taut narrative.
