In the year 2077, Earth has been ravaged by a war with an alien race known as the Scavs, which destroyed the moon and caused massive earthquakes and tsunamis that devastated much of the planet. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a drone repairman stationed on Earth, tasked with maintaining and repairing the automated drones that protect the planet's remaining resources from the Scavs.

As Jack nears the end of his mission, he encounters a group of human survivors led by Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman) who challenge everything Jack has been led to believe about his mission and the true nature of the war with the Scavs. Jack's partner and lover, Victoria Olsen (Andrea Riseborough), is conflicted about Jack's growing curiosity and mistrust of their superiors, as it threatens to destabilize their carefully ordered existence.

As Jack delves deeper into the secrets of his mission, he must confront not only the truth about his world but the echoes of his own past, including a wife he can barely remember and a mysterious woman (Olga Kurylenko) who seems to hold the key to his lost memories.

With stunning visuals and a hauntingly beautiful score by French electronic music duo M83, Oblivion is a stylish and thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that carefully balances action and emotion. With standout performances by Cruise and Freeman, as well as impressive turns by Riseborough and Kurylenko, the film explores themes of identity, memory, and humanity in a post-apocalyptic world that feels both familiar and alien.

Director Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed 2010's Tron: Legacy, shows a deft hand with both the film's action sequences and its quieter, more introspective moments. The film's gorgeous cinematography by Claudio Miranda, who won an Oscar for his work on Life of Pi, brings the desolate beauty of a ruined Earth to life in vivid detail.

Despite some plot holes and contrivances, Oblivion's ambitious and poignant storyline, combined with its spectacular visuals and top-notch performances, make it a standout entry in the sci-fi genre. The film explores complex questions about our place in the universe and what it means to be human, while also offering plenty of thrilling set pieces and tense action sequences. It's a movie that's both satisfyingly entertaining and intellectually engaging, and it cements Tom Cruise's place as one of Hollywood's most enduring and versatile movie stars.

Oblivion is a 2013 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 4 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.0 and a MetaScore of 54.
