Not One Less is a 1999 Chinese drama film directed by Zhang Yimou. The film tells the story of a young girl named Wei Minzhi who is selected as a substitute teacher in a poor rural village school in China. The school's only teacher, Gao, has to leave the village for a month to attend to a family emergency, and Wei is put in charge of the education of a group of 28 students.
Wei struggles to maintain discipline among the students, who are often absent from school to help their families with their work, and who are more interested in playing than in studying. When one of the students, Zhang Huike, goes missing in the city, Wei decides to go after him to bring him back to school, and so that the school will not lose one of its students and the 10 yuan reward for every student present at the end of the month.
Wei's journey takes her through the busy streets of the city, where she has to fend for herself in a world completely alien to her. The film explores themes of perseverance, compassion, and the power of the individual to make a difference in the face of overwhelming odds.
The film is shot in a gritty, realistic style, with director Zhang Yimou eschewing the use of professional actors in favor of non-professional actors, many of them locals from the village where the film was shot. This gives the film a sense of authenticity and immediacy, as the viewer is drawn into the world of the film through the eyes of its protagonist.
Not One Less was highly acclaimed upon its release, winning the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival and receiving a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. It is a moving and thought-provoking film that explores the themes of education, poverty, and the human spirit.
