In the silent film No Man's Law from 1927, we follow Rex as he plays the role of Texas Grant, a cowboy who finds himself caught in the middle of a feud between two families. He’s trying to leave the life of a cowboy behind him and convincing his friend, a fellow cowboy, to follow in his footsteps by moving to the city to make a life there. However, their plan is abruptly interrupted when Texas Grant witnesses a killing during a robbery. The bandit responsible for the murder is sent to the gallows, but his brother vows to seek revenge against Grant.

As Grant continues his travels, he finds himself in the midst of a long-standing feud between two families, the Sontag's and the McClintocks. During a conversation with an elder in the town, he learns that the conflict between the two families began a generation ago over a water treaty. Even though that treaty has long since been settled, the grudges held by both families continue.

As Grant becomes familiar with the two warring factions, he discovers the McClintock family has a young daughter, Mary (played by Barbara Kent), who has caught the eye of one of the Sontag boys. Despite the mutual attraction between the two, the Sontags and McClintocks won't allow her to leave home to be with the boy she loves.

As the conflict between the two families escalates, Grant finds himself in the middle of a feud that will rip their town apart. Along with Mary, he comes up with a plan to bring the two families together and put an end to the feud once and for all.

No Man's Law is a classic Western that has plenty of action, adventure, and romance. The cinematography is impressive for the time, with sweeping landscapes of the open prairies, cattle drives, and shootouts. What is most notable about this film is that it's not just another run-of-the-mill Western. Instead, the main protagonist is a peace-seeking cowboy who wants to leave the violent life behind and make something of himself in the city.

Rex delivers a strong performance as Texas Grant, a man determined to seek peace and reconcile the two opposing factions. His character is a product of a fractured world, one where cowboys must choose between loyalty to their brethren and the call of the city. His journey showcases the different worlds a cowboy can inhabit and the difficulties of overcoming the stereotypes associated with his profession.

Barbara Kent, who plays Mary, adds a touch of romance without overshadowing the central conflict of the film. Her character's naivety is at times frustrating, but it serves to underline the tragic nature of the feud. James Finlayson, who plays one of the elders of the town, brings a sense of gravitas and history to the film that anchors it in the Western archetypes that have come before.

The film's pacing is spot-on, with enough action to keep the viewer engaged while not sacrificing its emotional core. The final confrontation between the two families is heart-wrenching but satisfying as it brings closure to the feud. The film's ending is predictable but satisfying and true to the moral and ethical values of Westerns, where the hero always ends up on the right side of justice.

No Man's Law is an enjoyable watch that will appeal to fans of the Western genre. It’s a great example of the classic Western and its conventions, but its central protagonist's unique characteristics and their journey makes it stand apart. The film's themes of redemption, acceptance, and forgiveness also add a deeper layer to the story, which elevates it beyond the run-of-the-mill Western. No Man's Law captures the essence of the genre while at the same time adding a fresh perspective to it.

No Man's Law is a 1927 western with a runtime of 57 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4.
